TLDR : Answer Summary
Opening a bank account in Thailand as an expat can be challenging, especially on a short-term tourist visa. It is often necessary to have a long-term visa or to use the services of a visa agent who can assist with the process. Many banks have different requirements, and some may accept a letter from your accommodation as proof of residence. It's recommended to approach banks in areas with a significant foreign population and to be prepared with a deposit of at least 100,000 THB. Overall, engaging with an agent can streamline the process, especially if you're unsure of the specific requirements at different banks.

I had success some time ago on a 30 day entry stamp at Bangkok Bank, Exchange Tower. Be sure you have an address to list.

With a long-stay visa, you don’t need an agent. As Jan said, just ask your local bank what their requirements are.

If you require a Thai bank account because you intend on staying a long time , why not kill two birds with one stone and go see and agent to do both .. ( if your over 50 ) . ?
unless your going to live there what the point. I know a guy who was sending money to his thai bank account and it went missing he lost about 3000 pounds uk
if you stay a couple of months every year it totally makes sense having an account.

You should be able to open a bank account yourself, even if you are on a tourist visa or visa exempt stamp. All banks have different requirements. All branches have different requirements. Even within a branch two staff members may give very different answers. Find a branch of the bank you want (I use Bangkok Bank in Doi Saket), in an area with lots of foreigners. Go to the bank with your passport and a friend who holds an account at that branch. Have 100,000 thb to deposit. Should work but many banks/branches will also require a certificate of residence from Immigration. But instead, you could offer a letter from your hotel/ hostel/ Airbnb/ friends house stating that you stay there. Doi Saket Bangkok will work with that.
Ok, good. Then you should be able manage to manage yourself. The requirements can vary between banks and branches, so I suggest you ask directly yourself. This is as an example requirement from one branch in Bangkok Bank.
Reconsider if a Thai bankaccount is only nice-to-have and not need-to-have
Banks in Thailand are like everywhere in the world, interested in having good stable custormers, that have a permanent address, a steady easy traceable income, and use the account all year round.
That is why the banks are reluctant to give accounts to people on short time ( read: tourist ) visas, and who only spend part of the year in Thailand.
Don’t expect to get a residence certificat, until you have stayed at a permanent adress in at least 3 month, since that is what the residence certificat should confirm.
Furthermore the added attention on whitewashing of money, is an added burden on the banks, so even depositing large amounts isn’t a guaranteed way to open an account.
The value of a resident certificat, had gone down, since Immigration Officers are giving them to people that are not on a longterm visa, or have stayed severel months at 1 adress in Thailand, so even if it is a formal requirement, the bank make up their own assesment of the stability of the want-to-be customer.
