Any advice on MOVING to Thailand with a cat? Which airlines are more recommended? I've booked a flight with Cathay Pacific only to read that as of June 2022 they're no longer accepting bookings for pets as checked luggage, only cargo. That's not an option for me. Ideally I'd love for him to travel in the cabin with me or at least the same flight. Coming from the US. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

TLDR : Answer Summary
Moving to Thailand with a cat requires careful consideration of airline options, especially since some airlines have restrictions on pet travel. Cathay Pacific no longer accepts pets in the cabin as of June 2022, making it necessary to find alternatives. Recommendations from the community include Korean Air, Turkish Airlines, Lufthansa, and KLM, all of which allow cats to travel in the cabin. It's essential to secure the necessary health certificates and permits for traveling with pets to Thailand, including both export and import permits. Experiences shared by other travelers indicate that getting familiar with the travel arrangements and requirements ahead of time can help ensure a smoother journey.

I flow back to the USA with my cat on board in 2020. So not sure if they have changed rules but Asiana was perfect. But they where strict I couldn’t take him out of the bag. Only small dogs can come out I was told. So many trips to the restroom to let him out🤣

I used korean air for my cat and yorkie. Get vaccinated!

Turkish Airlines, Lufthansa, KLM, Korean Air allow pets in cabin.

I have flown my pugs in cabin (under the seat) on Turkish Airlines and Lufthansa.

You must get an export permit via a USDA accredited veterinarian in the USA and an import permit into Thailand. I have used Relo4Paws for the Thailand permits. Relo4Paws can be found on Facebook.

Google USDA certified vet for where you are in the USA

There are more Airlines that allow Pet in Cabin. Portuguese TAP. Ethiopian. Austrian airlines.

I listed the most convenient between the USA and Thailand

You can also split the trip by using TAP and then Lufthansa, to keep costs down.

I flew pugs to Lisbon on TAP, then flew Paris to BKK on Turkish Airlines

Ohhh I love this setup. Did you just use a water bottle for a gerbil or hamster and affix it with zip ties?

@Saige *****
Sure. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions. The airlines stored my cat in the compartment with room temperature. He came out just fine in Bangkok.

any recommendations for carrier brands. How will they eat/drink during the long flight?
Jonathan *****
@Saige *****
I used Hagen Pet Voyageur 300 series. The carrier size is 24.3 in L x 16.7 in W x 14.5 H

This size allowed my adult cat stood and turned easily inside.

I prepared a hanging pet water bottle and some dry food. Some cats may stop eating and drinking when they are in an unfamiliar environment. But they will be back to normal 1 day or 2 after landing.

I know with Cathay Pacific they won't allow you to bring certain breads as well, so if you chose to go with them with cargo, then you'll need a letter from your veterinarian identifying the exact bread. You will also need to have thier vaccines done at a minimum of 21 days prior to departure and a health check within 10 days of departure. If you're flying out of SFO, I have the email contact of thr person there, getting a hold of someone by phone is near impossible

Saige Bdot - Look at Delta or Korean with connection in Inchon to BKK. Both allow in the cabin with you with limitations. If you do this, please post what and how it worked for you.

Korean Air allows cats in cabin. I have been checking and I think they are the only way to Thailand with your cat in cabin.

A friend of mine just arrived with their small dog out of the US. I asked them what airline they took and will forward the answer when i get it.

Once in Thailand. NOK is the only airline that allows transporting small animals in the cabin. You have to contact them directly because you cant purchase that ticket online.

Cats don’t appear to have nine lives in Thailand. Just the one quick one.

Leave the cat at home ….

You will have to run air con 24x7 when you are not home (ie work, travel, shopping) and hope that it never fails.

Unless your cat is strictly indoors in Thailand, they will be in danger. Street dogs are everywhere, as well as snakes and other predators. In the past 3 years, we've had 6 cobras in our garden.

If he is strictly indoors, you will need to find a house with aircon in the living area, because you won't be able to open windows/doors.

We have 9 cats here and have been through the learning curve.

Best of luck!

Awesome! Our 9 kitties are too, but we had to install an aircon unit in our main room. <3
