What are the requirements for importing a cat to Thailand on a tourist visa and converting to a retirement visa?

Hi All.. I am planning to arrive in Thailand on a tourist visa and convert to retirement visa. I am bringing my cat (I have had numerous discussions with him and he does not want to stay in the UK anymore either). I was planning to arrive a few weeks before the cat but am now told I possibly need a long term visa to import the cat, contrary to previous advice. Thai authorities only seem to require a copy of passport but no visa for import licence? Does anyone have any experience on this as I have spoken to the pet relocation company and they do not have a diffinitive answer either. I would rather not stay in the UK for another 3 months, so any help appreciated…

TLDR : Answer Summary
The discussion revolves around the process of importing a cat to Thailand and transitioning from a tourist visa to a retirement visa. Multiple contributors share their experiences, indicating that a long-term visa is not strictly necessary for pet importation, as they successfully brought their pets on a tourist visa. Key points include the importance of proper vaccinations, health checks, and necessary documentation such as import permits and health certificates. It is recommended to arrive with a Non-Immigrant O visa to simplify the process of opening bank accounts and establishing residency in Thailand.

First question I would have is where you’ll enter Thailand; (as Relo4Paws only serves BKK; if you need a contact in Phuket just message me..) - You’ll need to ensure your cat has all the required certificates and vaccinations, pet passport helps, and then send an RF1-1 form to request a temporary import license (which you’ll swap for a real one once pre-approved and when you go to the livestock department at the airport when you pick your car up) … There’s a little work

In it, but timings of the injections, travel letter and when to request the import certs is the most important.. good luck!

You don't need a long term visa to bring your cat in the country, 100% sure. I brought my cat as well a few months ago while I was on tourist visa. Importing your cat and your visa are not related to each other. Theoretically you can import the cat and leave it in Thailand in other hands even if you return to your home country, as long as it was belong to you for a decent time before importing the pet.

Moreover, you don't really need a company to take care of the export/Import process. It is straight forward and you just need to send a few papers in advance to Thai govermental vet authorities and they'll send their approval. The pet export/Import company doesn't make things shorter (just get paid for doing what you can do yourself easily, you anyway have to submit the same paperwork). PM if you need more direction.

, I don't know about other cats, but mine never pooped or peed during flights (we had 4 long distance flights, we used soft carrier). Cats tend to keep their space clean and feel safer when their owner is nearby. I guess it influences what they do or not do during the flight.
Peter **********
@Ravit *****************
They define ‘cargo’ as travelling without the owner. My cat was in a special cargo area in the plane which was considered to an accompanied cat.

I wonder how much trouble it causes to other passengers when a cat needs to pee and poop during travel in the cabin. Better have her separate in a suitable container.
Ravit ******************
And it is easier to get the approval for Pet in Cabin rather that Cargo or as Handled bag. Your cat would be better next to you during the flight. You'll feel better too. I flew with my cat between continents 4 times in the past year, and I'm glad I chose taking her as Pet in cabin. It makes things much easier.

Aww well for UK we cannot get passports for our pets anymore so it’s only the health certificate and yes microchip etc each country is different
Peter **********
@Chanelle ********************
Something tells me this document is not right. I emailed and they sent me an official document stating the requirements. Rule #1: The cat must be chipped before vaccinations. Rule #2: The cat must bevaccinated against common cat diseases and rabies.

<more rules>

At least for EU citizens it is mandatory to have everything documented in an international passport. On top of that, a health certificate according to this and that model must be presented, not older than max 10 days before your arrival in Thailand, and verified by a national organisation (in Netherlands ‘the Food and Goods Authority’ - NVWA, don’t ask me why).

At the end the Thai rules stated that we do *not* need an import permit when the cat is flying with us in the same plane when we enter Thailand on Suvarnabhum Airport. The life stock inspection at the airport will check our documents and a permit is issued on the spot.

We had our cat in an IATA carrier and the cat was very carefully and gently handled by a security official who took her to a special area in the plane where a proper temperature for travel was maintained. I was quite impressed how well the cat was when we received him back at the airport. He doesn’t respond well when being mistreated but he was totally comfortable when they brought him into the cargo pickup area at the airport.

The Dutch lady from NVWA was complaining about the lack of a blood test. I told her it is not necessary and she insisted several times. In the end she said “You can be assured they won’t let the cat back into Netherlands when you return.” and I had to explain we were going on a one way ticket.

She asked “Don’t you like Netherlands?”. I smiled and replied “After the long monologue and irrelevant discussion we just had the move gets actually a lot easier.” 🤣

@Peter *********
no I didn’t have too I think it might be random if there not happy with the documents on arrival or maybe they just add it in incase not sure

@Chanelle ********************
30 day quarantine?? I’ve never seen that one before. No quarantine at all when I imported my cat one month ago…
Chanelle *********************
I flew from London Heathrow with my cat as extra luggage with Thai airways.

Just need to apply for import permit 60 days before travel (need picture of animal, passport details, flight itinerary, R1 form from import department , vaccination record) email for them is

Get the vet in the country there exporting to advise what vaccines and complete health certificate. You have to apply for health certificate with this link and the vet completes the application

Feel free to Pm me if you need any other information

I also did this on a tourist visa

@Peter *********
yes I had him already microchipped as I moved him from Shanghai to Uk then Thailand :) 🇹🇭

Good summary. Apparently the UK government gives different information than the Dutch government.

I had so much different (and contradicting) information from various sites that I decided to inquire at the Thai authorities.

I presume your cat was chipped already.

I think you misunderstand me. This is all part of getting my ducks in a row and looking at the best options for the well being of my cat. I am not planning to turn up next week with a suitcase and a cat and hope for the best 😬 I have advise from professionals and friends that have lived in Thailand for 25 years. The one anomaly was the entry requirements for the cat as I had differing information and was hoping someone had a similar experience. The other point now raised is if I qualify for an O as i am not yet retired and do not have a pension which are the key requirements for the O outside of the country. I will look into this.
Lynnette *******
@Steve ******
they really need to spend some time getting their ducks in a row. Just turning up, with a cat, and starting the bank account and "retirement" stuff, with no real idea maybe isn't wise.
Peter **********
We imported our cat just two weeks ago. I am from Netherlands so things might be slightly different for you.

The cat must be ID chipped before receiving the vaccinations and checks below.

The cat must be vaccinated for the various cat diseases, including rabies.

The vaccinations and all other relevant information needs to be written in an international cat passport.

Max 10 days before entering Thailand your cat needs to receive a health check. The check must be documented not only in the passport but also on a separate health certification document.

When sending the cat separately, not accompanied by yourself, you will need an import license. Better take the cat with you on the plane. The cat can be transported in an iata approved carrier.

Airlines have separate (heated) storage for pets. However, they have limited space. E.g. EVA Air takes max 5 animals on a flight.

Airliners may require a statement waving their responsibility if something happens during travel. EVA Air required two copies.

You’ll hand in the carrier and cat at check-in to a security officer. I was positively impressed how they understood how much we value our animal, both at depart as well as arrival in Bangkok.

In Bangkok you go to animal health inspection. They check your documentation, take a fee, and issue an import license (accompanied animals only).

Then you go through the “goods to declare” gate and declare the animal.

We totally paid a little over €1200 including the air fare.

I strongly suggest to come in with a 90 days non imm O it will make your life much easier in terms if opening bank account and wiring funds. To get this visa all requirements will be on the official evisa site (
***************************
) where you get it, it’s pretty straight forward and you obviously don’t need a bank account in thailand to obtain the visa you will open it using that visa once you get here. You can still use an agent but having the right visa will

make it simpler and much cheaper. For the pet you get all your info online this is what I found it’s pretty straight forward.

FYI. Lots of cats go missing here. Lots of snakes in Thailand

I came to Thailand with my cat in November 2023 (from South Africa) and arrived on a tourist exempt visa waiver (30 days) and had no issues / problems / questions from animal import customs when they issued the import permit for my cat, regarding my visa status or length of stay in Thailand..

I flew with my cat with me in cabin and did not use an agency. It was really a straightforward easy process to get my cat into Thailand.

@Alison *********
thank you.. This was what I had been told before! It was the pet relocation company that raised it and then couldn’t give me an answer! I was using an agency as I wasn’t flying with my cat, we can’t fly with them in cabin from the UK it seems…
Sascha **********
@Leigh **********
you can fly with pet in cabin from the UK, just not into the UK. You can arrive with your cat on a visa exempt or tourist visa, no problem. Don’t fly your cat in hold or in cargo, it will traumatize him.

KLM and Turkish Airlines are very cat-friendly, I always use them. Fly back and forth with my cat regularly

@Leigh **********
look at KLM, I'm currently looking into this aswell,

@Leigh **********
there are a Facebook group Bangkok Pet Lovers. I suggest you maybe ask on there about flying with your cat in cabin from the UK. I am not sure about UK specific restrictions that would prevent you from flying with your cat in cabin but in terms of airlines I believe you have many options.

@Leigh **********
we have not options from the uk as far as I can see for us to have our pet in the cabin.

Contact Relo4Paws they are pet relocators/import people. You may need to check out process retirement. Do that before just arriving with a cat. Have you got the funds in a Thai bank account etc?

I don’t have a Thai bank account and previous advice from friends who live in Thailand was to come in on a 60 day tourist visa and apply for retirement whilst in the country, gaining the bank account whilst there.. I know people who have travelled through Thailand with pet and they certainly didn’t have long stay visa’s, hence a bit confused now…
Leigh ***********

That is a good point but an option I didn’t want to do as I have no real support network in uk to look after the cat and I didn’t want to leave him in a cattery for that long. Although I can’t foresee any issues as have funds ready and I tick all other boxes, however nothing is guaranteed..

I have a similar problem but I'm not retiring for 3 more years yet. My cat is 7 years old. I'm happy to try to home your cat with mine until you get sorted. No charge at all. Happy to do it. Depends if this suits you and where you are in the UK. I'm in Portsmouth

so the 800,000 is already in a Thai bank account? You really need to check the process through thoroughly. Have you got the import paperwork done for the cat yet? Import Where are you going to live, is it cat friendly?

@Lynnette ******
I do not have the bank account yet but funds ready to transfer. My previous advice from an agent was to come to Thailand on a 60 day tourist visa and they would sort the bank account and process the retirement visa. I have received a lot of helpful information on here now and will look at all options before I come. The cat has had all his vaccinations but the rest of the paper work has to be done 10 days before he travels and I have a pet relocation company ready to do this. I will be going to Koh Samui and have sourced several suitable properties but until I settle on a relocation date it’s hard to secure anything. I have friends in Samui and a support network to help when I arrive. Thank you all for the advice and I will be looking into the various suggestions.

@Leigh **********
so happy you live your cat enough to bring it with you.

I contacted an agent in BKK. They also deal with the bank, but I've set up my bank account on my last visit and can now deposit my money before I head over next year. I'll be taking my dog too. He's disabled and no one wanted him because he's got wonky legs. 🐕
Lynnette *******
@Leigh **********
returning to UK with your cat if anything doesn't work out, is not simple.
Lynnette *******
@Leigh **********
so if you don't have the bank account yet, you've got to get that set up. I'd not bring a pet over untill you've got the retirement sorted. Because if there's any issues what will happen to the cat?
Jan ******************
I don’t know anything about importing pets to Thailand, but most convenient for several reasons is anyway to apply for a 90 days Non O long term visa at your embassy at home before you leave and just do extension of stay in Thailand.

@Jan *****************
I was advised by friends living in Thailand the best and most hassle free way was to come in on a tourist visa and apply for a retirement whilst in the country… It seems to take a long time applying in the uk and it would mean waiting after finishing my job, renting house out etc.. All seemed fine until this question was raised..(which I thought I had an answer to).
Max *************
@Leigh **********
Well, your friends are wrong.Starting with a 90 days Non-immigrant O Visa based on retirement is by far the easiest way. Then you just need to extend the stay 1 year after 60 days at the local immigration office. You need a thai bank account with ฿800k 2 months prior to the day you apply for the one year extension.
Monzi *************
@Leigh **********
- this is what I did and it was very easy & I used an agent - helps with 90 day check in etc. moving can be stressful and I tried to make it as stressful as possible free for myself as possible

Thanks.. I’m more than happy to leave the 800k baht in the bank long term but i thought to apply from UK I would need to be a “pensioner” as O states to be over 50 and in receipt of state pension. I can apply anyway and see what happens but didn’t want to be refused while in the uk incase it complicated matters later..
Colin *********
@Leigh **********
you do need to be at least 50 years old at the time of lodging an application for the 'Retirement' Visa.

@Colin ********
I’m 55 so hit that requirement! (Unfortunately 😂)

@Jan *****************
The other thing that confused me with applying from the UK on an “O” was that it states I have to be over 50 with a state pension. I don’t have a pension yet and can’t claim a state pension until 67? My income is from rental and savings..
Jan ******************
@Leigh **********
If you want to qualify based on funds not monthly income, you just apply at home with £
*****
, go to Thailand and open a bank account and bank the 800K baht within a month and after two months you apply for your first year extension of stay at the immigration.
Jan ******************
@Leigh **********
You can use regular income as well, don’t need to be a pension. But there’s two alternatives; income/pension minimum equals 65K baht a month (£1500) OR 800K baht (£
*****
) in funds. In Thailand you’ll need to bank 800K baht for your initial 90 days Non O and your extension of stay after 90 days. When you’re able to show proof of twelve consecutive transactions of min 65K baht you can use income for your extensions in Thailand.

This is the legal official way to apply for and maintain a stay based on retirement in Thailand.
Leigh ***********
ORIGINAL POSTER
Thank you Jan.. I will have a look at this. I have heard so many differing opinions on the best way to go about gaining the retirement visa. I was happy to use an agent as I had understood that I couldn’t apply for a Thai bank account until I was in the country anyway and it was easier with an agent. I will have a look into it again. Thank you.
Jan ******************
@Leigh **********
Several people will disagree with this. On a tourist visa you’ll need an agent to get help you opening a bank account and at home you can just apply online with your income/pension and you can stay for three months before you need to apply for an extension of stay in Thailand. The requirements for apply for a 90 days Non O in country and at your embassy at home are more or less the same, but in Thailand you’ll need to open a bank account and bank 800K baht before you can apply. The Non O visa is valid for three months after it’s issued and you get stamped in for 90 days anytime within this three months period. Based on feedbacks the processing time at the embassy in London is quite fast at date. Up to you🤷🏼😉
