TLDR : Answer Summary
The discussion revolves around the adoption of QR Code payments in Thailand and their implications for foreigners. A user highlights a questionnaire aimed at studying this payment method's impact. Reactions vary widely: some view QR payments as a convenient evolution towards a cashless society, while others are skeptical or outright against the move, citing security issues and the importance of cash in day-to-day transactions. Some comments also touch on the difficulties foreigners face in obtaining Thai bank accounts, which limits their ability to use such payment options.
However it is very convenient! And anyone with nothing to hide has no worries!

There is already a QR code system for foreigners in Thailand. It's called WeChat and Alipay. Been accepted at 711 stores since at least 2018. Many malls and stores popular with Chinese tourists accept one or the other, or both.

I love paying with QR code.. it is very convenient
Paul *******
It literally takes 2 seconds to make payment with cash. Nothing is faster than that!
We need to fight the cashless system untill our last breath.. if it's allowed to happen the world is done for .. Think Great Reset. New World Order and permanent global controlled tyranny..
It's called WeChat and Alipay. Accepted at many stores throughout Thailand since at least 2018. Mostly used by the Chinese, many expats are starting to use them now too.
okay sir you can edit your post so at least you get right input! Again the problem is same how a foreigner you expect to be cashless when while entering he is required to show cash or equivalent balance of thai currency? Nithi Manjaiarn sir appreciate your efforts- now to enthusiastically entertain a foreigner to use QR or any other gateway he/she will need local thai account! Yes you agree with that? Right So we know what steps on what order we need to work out., and the 100% of vendors or local shops should be tech Savvy.!
how about treating foreigners like thais and give them the option. Overreaching corporations and governments are using cashless society's as a tool of control. Let's just link it to a social credit system and go full new world order.
so true !!!!!. Don't need a university study to know that👏👏👏👏

Absolutely not. Cash is king. Otherwise, debit and credit cards are good. No need to reinvent the wheel.

In Thailand cash is still primarily used for transactions. I rarely use anything but cash for day to day life
Paul *******
China and Sweden are leading nations when it comes to becoming a cashless society.

Absolute nonsense. Thailand has been using cashless payments for some time, but a "leading country" it is not. While acceptance of credit and debit cards is widespread, cash is still king in Thailand and this hasn't changed much not even during the plandemic.
using Thai name isn't making you a Thai expert so to see on that answer. In my eyes, Thailand is one of the kneading country's concerning cashless payments. I walk around here and go shopping , full days, with not even 1 THB in my pocket. Only my Smartphone
Guys, the author here is conducting a study, not promoting cashless payments. Just answer the questionaire in a way that reflects your opinion to show that foreigners do not want to pay with QR then.
how you expect a foreigner pay thru QR- until he gets a local thai account - even for long term visas they need seasoned amount in bank/ while bank asks long term visa first to get simple saving account!
right sir! Anyway for me the authors post and survey seems pointless! Foreigners are welcomed as good as locals to pay via QR! Now I wait for authors comments and response to elaborate his point 👍

Fuck the new world order. Cash is our last little bit of freedom.
Goes way beyond what brand of household products you use.
These private party and government data aggregators have dossiers on people that would make the Stasi green with envy.
It’s not just keeping track of what you buy, what you own, where you go, who you associate with, your politics, all the skeletons in your closet but also it’s being able to flip a switch and make your assets disappear.
Maybe you have job or business that puts you in a position where someone up the food chain decides you need to be controlled.
Or maybe you’re just a low level nobody who happens to have a job that can get you access to a high value target.
Or maybe you decide to speak out publicly against some corrupt people and actually make some ripples in the pond.
In the past you could make the argument that you simply weren’t important enough for anyone to bother going after you.
But now being targeted can be done automatically by computer systems at mass scale.
Look at the social credit system the Chinese built.
Oh and that’s just what you have to worry about from governments.
Doesn’t even get into what organized crime hacker groups can do when they gain access to this data which is often poorly secured.
I'm just a retiree with no agendas. Enjoying life as it should be, not shaking with fear over the New World Order! If "they" want to know my movements I'm happy for "them" - I honestly and truthfully have absolutely NOTHING to hide! 😆
Without privacy, you can't have anything for yourself. Saying you don't care about privacy because you have nothing to hide is like saying you don't care about free speech because you have nothing to say.
Whatever. I just can't be bothered with all that crap. Problem with free speech is there are too many whackos out there peddling bullshit, and so many people believe them!
fuck that idea, horrible plan that I won't support in any way. I don't want government knowing everything I do, it's none of their fkn business. Freedom of choice and I say no. Cheers
I don't think you'll get a choice somehow, but good luck with it!

they have more control than just your money... that's just the start.. have been here 8 years and have watched it evolve n the last 2 years into a total social control tool as well.. don't do it

Why are you doing that?!
Cashless is seems sweet….However Sugar is dangerous.
Sorry I won’t support this study. I prefer cash. Study like this is behind what purpose? You want to turn Thailand into China?
I didn't know that China is already cashless 100% and they can just take control of your account by not doing a thing that the government doesn't like.
For my cashless meaning is to try as much it can and turn physical cash to exchange easier than a banknote or coin and give convenience to tourist travel in Thailand as much they can.

Again I am a foreigner and I pay for sticky rice to local street vendor through QR- from my Thai bank!
Siddhartha *********
Yeah and also I have seen some vendors don’t use qr or prompt pay or online banking- what to do about it?
Some rumors spread that the government gonna tracking their sale and force them to pay taxes. But for those who don't receive money from promptpay or QR it is like they just cut a good channel to get money.
no tracking and all that- it is just also a part to keep legit money! Cash indirectly connected to black money many times- while online money or money through banking system by default is accountable and taxed! Again my thoughts , also Thailand is crypto friendly and blockchain have revolutionized the payment Chanel won’t you agree?
Not every Thai is poor. The arrogance and ignorance when farang say this really makes my blood boil. Most Thais are middle class. There is probably a higher percentage of Thais who own farmland or an upcountry property than westerners, most of whom only own one suburban home back in their countries but no farmland.
That being said, yes you don't want to exclude anyone by promoting digital payments like this.
to be constructive : , tell me how will the millions of poor people will manage in a cashless society ???
Do you know there are hundreds of thousands of people who can't even read , in Thailand , not to mention people who can"t count , should I tell you about all the tribal people who are not allowed to open a bank account .how will these people manage
a QR code way of payment , when they have to manage their daily budget (often less than 100 bahts a day) to feed the all family ??
Î live in an area where hundreds of my neighbours have to earn money on an everyday base . Don't tell them they'll be paid by QR code , and they will spend their little money by QR code .
Don't have to be emotional to say it is the most stupid idea . Not everybody has a well fed farang's bank account . Not everybody in Thailand can spend without counting . Sorry to know what I,'m talking about .
before commenting on something it's best to have some idea of what you're commenting on

My friend - since you are part of banking system! Before survey and initiative to grant foreigners access to pay online! What and how would it be possible?Again survey is needed to get foreigners have thai bank account! For many its a task with lots of hoops and hassles! Had it been simple to have open Thai bank account for foreigners than paying online or through QR won’t be an issue! May be I miss something— but how about survey for foreigners getting Thai bank account??
Can I say Thailand is working on it. I am really sorry for any inconvenience that happen to you before. I was work in a bank for a few years but now I study a master's degree with the hope of getting smarter.
Now I have a foreign friend who says the same thing as you. So I decided to create this questionnaire to make sure If QR payment is the right way to go help people like you, why do we not push more effort to work in this way. I believe If it's really easy to do that it's not gonna have this conversation happen.
ask your foreign friend sir? Account opening in Thailand problem or QR PAYMENT ACCEPTANCES a problem

I have to agree here too. It is a total pain in the ass, as many bank clerks do not know how to open a bank account for a foreigner and they make it easy on themselves bye saying "can not do sir" ......
If your phone runs out of battery, it's useless. If the internet is broken, it's useless. If your phone is frozen or technical error, it's useless. If you say something bad about the government, your account will be frozen. Cash is never offline, cash is never broken, cash is KING
My banking app has been broken twice this month, my phone has run out of battery more times than I can count. So dont exaggerate with 99%. As political hacking advances, whole payment systems will be taken offline so wake up and stop pushing commie crap.

I'd much rather more businesses accept credit cards. Much more useful than QR code payments.
Cashless is the worst system and designed for fools.

Thailand is one of a few country's where you can already pay bye QR code even for a street food lunch for under 30 THB
Paul *******
Nope. Not been my experience. All the food vendors around me only accept cash. The way it should be.
Paul *******
Where? Most street food vendors only accept cash. Same as market stalls. A few more upmarket ones also accept credit cards but generally it's cash only. The way it should be. Personally I use mostly cash occasionally debit or credit cards. That's it. I don't want to try any other methods of payment when shopping in person.
I feel like super happy we don't need to carry around money in our pockets all the time. It also saves on pants repairs due to holes in the pockets caused bye coins. 555
And a 3th point is, as you mentioned yourself, easy to track in your bank app where your expenses money went to

Lots of street food places now take payment with QR code. I think it's great. The need to carry cash is dwindling.
Cash is the financial embodiment of freedom. Centralised banking and highly regulated financial systems are the stepping stones to overreaching government control.
Good question! Cash is made by the central bank of each country in Thailand, called the Bank of Thailand, which tries to make a stable economy of Thailand by using fiscal policy.
You shouldn't enter a study with the intention of proving anything, you should enter with the unbiased view that your question could be either proven or disproven.
Yes correct! but what is for street food or small food stall that can't get the EDC to receive card payment?
I think QR is the cheapest way to pay for goods and services which is not a high amount.
For foreigners who come from western countries like the US or Europe is based on card payments and have to exchange money for Thai cash maybe it has to be a better way to improve that or maybe it is nothing to deal with.
That is why I study this topic to ask foreigners who came to Thailand to prove my assumption.
By the way, thank you for your answer. 🙏

Think it will be just as much tondo with the foreign banks. PayPal offers QR payments but only on their own system. You probably should aim ant them and promptpay
I think Thailand has its own bank ecosystem which is not connected with others. But now I saw that the Bank of Thailand started to develop the system to connect with Singapore or ASEAN countries.
For my study I would focus on If you think about QR payment, what do you want to use or not? because you need to have smartphone access to the internet.
QR payments are great for both small vendors and those without cards because there are no transaction fees, which is probably why they're not yet more popular in Western nations. They're essentially faster payment Bacs payments. Obviously if you're looking at including foreign bank accounts it then involves the swift system and I don't know enough about that and the costs involved to see whether these instant payments are possible at no fee.
everyone accept the card companies missing out on their 2.5% transaction fees. One would thinks the smaller players like Wise and Revolut with they way they are set up could integrate easily enough
Maybe you are right. I believe that If I try to find that to understand foreigners who visit Thailand and see now Thai people use QR code or Promptpay payment almost every transaction.
From my experience right now, I rarely withdraw cash from ATM maybe one time per month.
Agreed. But you're initial comment was "it will never work" without any qualifying statement. I responded by stating it already does, as I'm a frequent user which confirms it DOES work. Something tells me I'm not the only person using QR payments in Thailand
I can use my chase credit card here and get good exchange rates (I pay in baht) w/ no foreign transaction fees. If you have a card geared towards travel, it's not usually a problem.

If this study help to prove that foreigners really want to use QR code payment the same as Thais, maybe our regulator in Thailand, like the Bank of Thailand, will get consideration.
so, in other words, you’re not a tourist. The QR system here doesn’t work for tourists as you need a Thai bank account. I’ll go one further and add that it’s not nearly as efficient as using WeChat Pay in China. It’s kind of “clunky”.
I don't know. As a tourist I prefer using contactless transactions, just a "beep" and it's paid. Most businesses accept this throughout Australia and most of Europe
as Joseph says will never work for tourists due no no thai bank and anyone using Visa or Mastercard would be mad to use it for small transactions unless it was free, which it won't being foreign transaction
It will not work without Thai bank account? You should not look at how it will not work but how it can work. If you would not need a Thai bank account it would be nice for tourists.
Plenty of card providers offer "no foreign transaction fees" as one of the benefits, along with good exchange rates. It's not impossible if you can get Visa/Mastercard on-board. In that case, though, the vendor would be paying for processing (likely via a fee on their bank) unless it was subsidized.
complicated and near impossible here apart from large stores, more so if costs passed to vendor. I have not found a card free for foreign use unless they have crap rates
It would have to be offered as a service by the banks w/o requiring the vendors to engage with the card processor. The foreign card holder wouldn't be disadvantaged if the have a good travel card, and the vendor would likely pay a fee to their bank for the processor kickback. The biggest issue would be the logistics of how the foreign card holder would actually execute the payment--likely needing to set up a basic account.
don’t get me wrong, if it gets ironed out, it could be a very cost effective way to pay for things in foreign currencies. Unfortunately, greed becomes the proverbial wrench in the gears.
