TLDR : Answer Summary
When leaving Thailand with your 8-month-old baby who was born in the country, the baby typically will not be fined or banned for overstaying, as children under 15 cannot be fined and under 18 cannot be banned for overstay. However, it's advisable to secure a passport for your baby, as it's a common requirement for international travel, even though there are instances where parents have traveled with just a birth certificate. It's best to ensure your baby has a proper visa or entry stamp to avoid complications upon reentry.

No fines or bans for babies but they do get the overstay stamp in their passport. I got an O visa for my 1 year old to be safe.

Have a similar question regarding babies....can I travel from Thailand to Vientaine (to put myself and my children on a non o visa) with my newborn just with it's birth certificate? or does the baby need a passport? We will be getting it a passport but by the time we register the birth in Australia & get certificate to get passport it could take months!

I just guess: The newborn is born in Thailand. You can get a Thai birth certificate, with that you can apply for the passport at your Embassy, at least according the rules on their website.

thanks so that, thought it was a long shot!

You wont be allowed to cross the border without a passport for baby. Tried and sadly failed at malaysian border. We had thai birth certificate and letter from embassy.

I can't register the birth, but I can get the passport which would take about 15 days to receive back via mail. It's registering the birth in Australia that I'm worried about. From their website and past experiences it takes a couple of months to receive the birth certificate

Can you not register the baby at the Australian Embassy in Bangkok?

The way the overstay and banning rules are written, children under 15 cannot be fined for overstay and children under 18 cannot be banned for overstay.

Most foreigners I know just have their kids come in on a visa exempt entry and let them overstay (for years sometimes) until they're old enough to go to school, then get them an ED visa.
