Do I need to do a visa run for my baby if we are waiting for her Thai passport after entering Thailand on a US passport?

dual national issues - my baby came into thailand on her us passport (30 day stamp) as we are still waiting on her thai birth certificate. once we have her thai passport, will we have to do a visa run? or is there some way we can change her over in thailand. seems nuts for a four month old to have to border hop! had any dealt with this before?

a friend has suggested that immigration are pretty lax about babies overstaying and we can just wait until we actually need to leave the country to make the switch.

TLDR : Answer Summary
A child born with dual nationality cannot switch their visa status inside Thailand. Once you receive your baby's Thai passport, she must exit the country and re-enter on the Thai passport to switch nationality. However, as a minor under 15 years old, she will not incur a financial fine for overstaying, but she will receive an overstay stamp on her US passport upon departure.

You cannot change your child's nationality inside Thailand. She needs to leave by air and enter on a Thai passport again to switch.

But If you get her nationality sorted, she can apply for a 1-year extension as a foreigner who has Thai nationality.

A child under 15 years old wouldn't get a financial fine for overstaying, still, she will get an overstay stamp on her passport upon her departure from Thailand.

yes this is the preferred solution and extension to request.

thank you! a one-year extension would be the perfect solution since we’re likely to make a trip by air within that time anyways.

just remember she has to leave on the same passport she entered on, and that you can only switch the passports by air travel. So leave on the US passport. Enter whatever country you are going to, by air, with the passport that makes sense. Re-enter Thailand, by air, with the Thai passport.
