Good day!

I will enter Thailand soon with an ED visa. This is my first time studying in Thailand. Do I need to prepare 20K Baht worth of cash? I heard that Thai immigration is asking for it in the airport. I hope someone can answer or someone can share his/her experience when entering Thailand with an ed visa (non formal education)

Thank you in advance!

TLDR : Answer Summary
When entering Thailand with an ED visa, there is a possibility that immigration may ask for proof of funds, specifically 20,000 Baht or the equivalent in cash. While many travelers report not being asked for this, it is advisable to carry the amount just in case. Some have successfully provided bank statements as proof in the absence of cash. Additionally, it's noted that some travelers are often required to show proof of onward travel before boarding their flight to Thailand.

Whether someone has entered the country a hundred times and never been asked for proof of funds doesn't mean that there isn't a law on the books that says IF you're asked for proof of funds you show 20K baht or the equivalent in CASH, not a credit card, not an online bank statement, CASH is the only proof of funds they accept IF you are asked to show it. And before you ask no, there are no ATM's air side (from the arrival gates to passport control)

If you people have questions about whether you wanna get the ED visa before you come here OR come here and get the visa in country from the immigration office ASK the school or uni you're enrolling with what they recommend.

We are done, good luck to the O/P

Sorry op, irrelavant to your topic, can I ask how did you get the ED visa? Did you apply through the evisa website? Was it easy? I am debating to go on a tourist visa or an ed visa. Thank you.

Thanks a lot. Same here. I already talked to a uni. I am just debating to get the ed visa in Thailand or out here. I am in a third country. And I worry if there will be any issue with entry on ed visa.

I applied in my home country for an Ed visa. It was easy because that was really my intention. Only to study.

and others... simply follow the instructions on the Thai Embassy website in your home country.

Contact the school you wish to study with and they can assist you if you are a student serious about studying with them.

I was asked one time to prove I had 20k worth of money with me. I didn't have it as cash money on me at that time but they accepted a bank statement from my internet banking as a proof of funds. From now on I always travel with at least 600 euros with me when going to Thailand.

Equal to $625 USD. If you don't have that in your back pocket you probably are not ready to leave your home country for anywhere overseas

i arrived on a visa exempt, no onward ticket, the airline in order to board asked me to show the 20k...

It's best to have it just in case but you probably won't be asked for it, I've never been asked In 7 years here, but you will most likely get asked about you're onward travel at the airport you're departing from. Both times I have left the UK for thailand I was asked to show my onward travel or long term visa but then arrived in Thailand and was never asked for it

@Ellie ******
And if you can show you're on a long term visa and not a tourist then obviously you shouldnt need to show anything for onward travel

@Ellie ******
No but I was asked about it In the UK before I boarded but I had the 20k In cash on me just jn case I was asked when I got to Thailand but I wasnt asked and never have been. Most people as you probably know dont get asked to show 20k in cash but it is better to have it just in case I would say 🤷
Ellie *******
So you didn't have to show onward ticket or cash at the immigration/passport control when you arrived in Bangkok.

I once flew from the UK on a non b visa as I was visiting home and did it as one if my 90 fat border runs. I was asked at Manchester airport for my onward ticket by one I explained I lived there and showed my visa they were okay

@Anthony ********
, have you been asked for an onward ticket when you entered on a Non-ED visa?

The question with the most different answers.

Official the Immigration Officer can ask every visitor to Thailand to show:

1. 20.000 Thb or equivalent currency in cash

2. Proof of onward travel

3. Proof of accomodation.

Some people get asked, most of them not.

There is no quarantee you get asked or not and above all: You can not show a facebook comment like: I did not get ask to get a free passage.
