TLDR : Answer Summary
Travelers entering Thailand on a tourist visa are advised to carry 20,000 baht in cash, or the equivalent in foreign currency, as immigration officials have the authority to request this proof of funds. While individual experiences vary, having the cash is a precautionary measure; failure to present it upon request could lead to denial of entry. It's important to note that while some travelers have not been asked for this amount, others have reported being required to show it.

OK Folks....

IF asked by Thai Immigration to show 20,000 Thai baht OR its foreign currency equivalent...

It MUST BE IN CASH.

PERIOD...END OF STORY...

FORGET whatever you have read elsewhere...or heard from someone... sometime...even here in a few WRONG advice replies...

ALWAYS be prepared ...

REGARDLESS OF WHAT KIND OF VISA or exempt entry on arrival ..

SHOW 20,000 Thai baht CASH or its foreign currency equal.

Thanks All for your replies...

a few wrong...Many correct ...

20k baht in cash hardly seems like a large amount when traveling. I can’t imagine traveling with less than that.

Never been asked to show money

20k bht isn’t much anyway although I’ve never been asked to show money going back this month but only for months holiday

I came in on tourist visa last Wednesday, didn't get asked. Australian

Been in Thailand for years on two month visas and never been asked prob because we’ve already shown it. Thai government web pages clearly state the requirement is for people entering on visa exempt only.

forget whatever you read...if asked must show 20,000 Thai baht or equal..in CASH

@Ricky ********
lol U people dont get it. The law does not apply here.

You can be asked to show anything by anyone but can you show me a Thai government web site that says if you have a visa then you must still bring the money in?
Ivan ************
This is not true. You can be asked to show 20,000 entering with a visa also.

Credit card easier

Ive had to show it in the past.. its best to be prepared...

You need to have ฿20k or the equivalent in another major currency because the immigration officials are within their rights to ask to see it. Proof of funds to support yourself is a prerequisite to being granted a stay in the kingdom. If they ask and you don’t have it you will be refused entry.

I never carry that much cash when traveling. So I leave the airport and everyone knows I have that much cash on me.
