Question related to Chiang Mai immigration office. Do I have to be a lemming and get at the immigration at 4 in the morning to transfer my visa from my old passport to my new passport? Or do they have a different service for this? Thanks

TLDR : Answer Summary
To transfer your visa from an old passport to a new one at the Chiang Mai immigration office, you do not need to arrive at 4 AM. It's suggested to go around 10:30-11:00 AM. They will not transfer the visa itself but will note your previous visa in the old passport and transfer the 'admitted until' stamp or 'extension of stay' stamp. It's important to have a letter from your consulate confirming you received a new passport.

Australia gives a stamp and they accept this. Copy your full old passport(they need more scrap paper).

Room 3 is downstairs near the restaurants.

Do you know if there's a special room up at the immigration office in Chiang Mai that does stamp transfers to a new passport

Make sure you have the letter from your consulate stating you got a new passport. Down here in Bangkok they won't transfer the stamps without that letter.

I applied for a new passport at my embassy in BKK and when that new passport was ready, they just cancelled the old pasport and wrote a letter that I have to bring to immigration with both passports

I think you could get there after they open and not at 4 in the morning.

I'd go about 10:30-11:00.

Remember they don't EVER transfer a visa into another passport. They note you held xxx visa in the old passport and move your "admitted until stamp" or your "extension of stay" stamp to the new one.

IF you have a valid multi-entry visa you travel with BOTH passports until the visa in the old passport expires.
