Do I need to transfer my visa stamps to my new passport immediately or can I wait until my extension in December?

Hello everyone. I'm looking for some clarification on something. I'm an American with a non-b and I'm currently on an extension of stay, valid until the end of December. My passport expires early next year, so I applied for a new one. It's waiting at the embassy for whenever I'm ready to pick it up, and then my old passport will be cancelled. Are there any laws about when I need to have the stamps transferred, or can I just wait until I do my extension again in December? I'd rather not waste my day going to CW this month and then going again in December. Thanks.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user, an American on a NON-B visa with a current extension of stay until December, seeks clarification on whether they should transfer their visa stamps to their new passport immediately after receiving it or wait until their extension application in December. Comments suggest that while it's possible to wait, it's recommended to transfer the stamps as soon as possible. An embassy letter will facilitate the transfer process at Immigration, which is usually free of charge.

I was hoping to save a trip and some money, but it looks like I'll need to go there soon. Thanks for the answers everyone.

Your passport must be valid for 6 months at the time you apply for an extension. When you get the renewed passport they 'll transfer visa on new passport.

While your comment has nothing to do with the O/P's post you're not quite correct. Your passport needs to be valid only for the length of time you're getting an extension for.

If you are applying for a year extension and your passport isn't valid for the whole extension they only give you the extension until your passport expires.

As soon as you get your new passport you will also get a letter from the Embassy for Immigration. Than go to Immigration to transfer the stamps into your new passport, service should be free of charge at Immigration.

I don't know what the rules are - and I know you didn't ask for opinion so am going to give it to you anyway. I wouldn't want to introduce the confusion with extension and stamp transfer. I would go for one - then the other.

I've done that twice with my US passport as well, the process at DMCW is pretty quick, only took me about 1 hour and the embassy recommends you transfer your visas asap.
