Do I need to transfer my ED visa to my new passport to leave Thailand?

ORIGINAL POSTER
I just received my new passport (old passport was about to expire).

My Thai ED visa and all of my entry and visa renewal stamps are in my old passport. My ED visa expires at the end of April, and I will be leaving Thailand then. I plan to apply for a new visa after I’ve left the country.

Do I have to transfer my ED visa and stamps to my new passport to leave Thailand at the end of April or will there be no problem leaving with my new passport and my visa and stamps still on my old passport?

TLDR : Answer Summary
You cannot transfer your ED visa from your old passport to the new one. It is recommended to carry both your new passport and your old passport, showing the visa and entry stamps in the old passport when you leave Thailand.

You can't transfer visas between passports. Carry both and show both.

But you can transfer extension stamps and multiple entry stamps, correct???

, correct and as a rule, you should transfer an extension and re-entry stamps.

Thanks Ellie… I’ll be embarking on that very mission, once I get my new passport back from the US Embassy. Hopefully that process is not too complicated!

, the process is simple enough. Please make your own post if you need anything further.

You sound like you are on an extension based on studying rather than on the first 90 days from a Non-ED visa.

In these cases, you have to cancel your current extension at the immigration office that issued the extension. To cancel your extension, you have to transfer related stamps to the new passport first.

- in case you want to apply for a long-term (more than 90 days) visa or extension in your future

- in case you want to leave Thailand through a land border

If you leave and back to Thailand by air AND stay in Thailand only as a tourist with only an entry stamp, you may be able to leave bringing both passports (show current stamps in the old passport, be stamped out on the new passport) without doing anything prior.
