EXTEND TOURIST VISA at two offices?

My latest 60-day extension expires 28 July. I usually apply and pay at least a month prior, wait several weeks, and then visit again for the stamp.

I plan to leave Chiang Mai 1 July and travel south, arriving somewhere around Phuket a week or so later. So, do I, (can I...):

A. Apply here in Chiang Mai now, and get my stamp in the Phuket office sometime in July?

B. Wait until the second week in July, (which is kinda late, I think...) and then apply in Phuket and get my stamp there?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user seeks advice on extending a tourist visa that expires on July 28 while traveling from Chiang Mai to Phuket. Key issues include the ability to apply for an extension in Chiang Mai and receive the stamp in Phuket, confusion surrounding COVID-related extensions, and the entry requirements for Phuket, particularly for domestic arrivals.

It appears-your experience has been very different from mine. I have had multiple extensions and I go in and apply about two days before the end of my Current extension. They keep my passport for two weeks here in Chiang Mai and then I go pick it up. The stamp Put in my passport is the day I applied for the extension, not when I picked it up.

I have done what you did, sort of. I mean, I applied only a week or two before my visa expired, and it was all okay. They have NEVER kept my passport, though. That is CRAZY!

Umm Edward Nathan, (
@เอ็ดเวิร์ด ******
) there is no "they keep my passport for 2 weeks" :(

Extensions are either issued ON THE SPOT (retirement, 30 day extension, ED extension)

OR

you get an under consideration stamp and go back on that date.

There is no "above the table" visa extension where immigrations holds your passport <- NONE..

If vaccination is required to enter Phuket and you are not vaccinated, You may try pass a thousand baht to the officer when entering Phuket, he MAY just let you in..😂😂😂

@Ronald ****
you can get a rapid antigen test at Takuapa Hospital in Phang Nga for 620thb

There seems to be a great deal of confusion on the issue of Phuket. There are two categories of people arriving in Phuket. International arrivals take place under the Phuket Sandbox proposal that is currently being worked out. Domestic arrivals don't have anything to do with the Phuket Sandbox. Nothing at all. The OP would be considered a domestic arrival. He would have to be vaccinated OR pass a covid test no older than seven days.
George *************
Sometimes people are misinformed even if they are superintendents of a very large private school in Bangkok.

In my opinion, you are making something very simple complicated. Look at the graphic. Understand what it is saying. You don't seem to want to take yes for an answer. ;-)

I honestly don't know what else to say.

@George ************
in relation to pricing.... I have social security and my stepson is a minor so probably best not to expect same price if you don't pay ss. But I've never heard of them ripping off foreigners.

@Geo***
, okay, now for the annoying question. I am in Chiang Mai, and may spend about a week riding my motorbike to Phuket. So, I should not have the test done here, eh? Do you know if tests are easily available at hospitals along the way? Where else? Thank you!

@Mark **********
Finally found a list of all medical testing labs in Thailand. You can look by name of city or you can sort by province:

*******************************************************

You would have to contact for information about tests available and cost. Put shows where each medical testing lab is located.

In general, the rapid antigen test is cheaper than the RT-PCR test. Both are accepted for entry into Phuket. It would stand to reason that it would be possible to get a rapid antigen test in Phang Nga (province to which Phuket is connected by a bridge) but I have not found anything online in English. A rapid antigen test can be found, for instance, in Bangkok for 1,500 baht:

There must be many rapid antigen testing places throughout Thailand but it's tough to find them online.

Excellent, that's quite reasonable compared to the RT-PCR test that can sometimes run as high as 5,800.

We have family that were trying to come while we are there(in Phuket) that live in Bangkok and they were told they cannot so information is definitely confusing all the way around.. They are superintendents of a very large private school in Bangkok and were told by their thai representative that you must be vaccinated to go.. also all 3 must apply to enter..

@Kathy ***************
And who told them that?

I will try to make this as clear as I can as I appreciate there's been a lot of "news."

There are only two kinds of people in Phuket.

1) International Arrivals. What this means is that you arrive in Phuket at the International Airport on an international flight. In other words, you weren't in Thailand before and now you are and that arrival occurred in Phuket. You are subject to all the rules for international arrivals, commonly called the Phuket Sandbox Rules which will become official (and known) when the proposal is finally passed and published in the Royal Gazette, which is expected to happen in a few days.

2) Domestic Arrivals. What this means is that you are already in Thailand, just not yet in Phuket. You can arrive in Phuket on a domestic flight at the airport, or you can drive across the bridge into Phuket. The Phuket Sandbox rules (whatever they turn out to be) have absolutely nothing to do with you. Not one little bit.

Now, Phuket has rules for domestic arrivals. The rules are as specified in the following graphic.

Kathy, respectfully you are mashing together the rules for entering Phuket as a domestic arrival with the Phuket Sandbox rules for international arrivals.

For a domestic arrival, it couldn't be simpler. Just follow the rules published in the chart below. Nothing to do with the Phuket Sandbox. Look at the graphic. See the 1 with the words "Domestic Arrivals." See that there are three options there 01, 02, or 03. You pick one (1) and only one (1) of those options to satisfy the requirements to enter Phuket. Note: again you are a domestic arrival, not an international arrival. Don't become agitated about the international arrival rules (Phuket Sandbox) because they DON'T apply to you as a domestic arrival.

[As a sanity check, think about what it would mean if you had to satisfy all three (3) options. You would have to be fully vaccinated (or have one jab of AstraZeneca) AND you would have to have a negative covid test AND you would have had to have already had covid. That is not the case. It makes no sense. People are arriving in Phuket every day who have NEVER had covid.]

I'll grant the "news" has been buzzing with Phuket Sandbox "information," but if you are a domestic arrival it DOES NOT MATTER AT ALL. You need to follow the domestic Phuket entry rules ONLY. The Phuket Sandbox rules do not matter for the purpose of entering Phuket as a domestic arrival.
Kathy ****************
we were told all 3 in the domestic category have to be met, not just testing negative in the last 7 days. then you have to have a test at the airport upon arrival, 6 days later, then on day 13..

Which visa is this for?

Trying to learn which one I need, coming from USA and want the possibility of obtaining a work visa.

Is there a visa that can get unlimited 60 day extensions and still be eligible for a work visa eventually?
Benjamin ******
@Bruno *******
>Is there a visa that can get unlimited 60 day extensions and still be eligible for a work visa eventually?

The only 60 day extension of stay that exist is a "60 day extension of stay based on unable to travel due to COVID-19". The last day a person can apply for this extension is July 28, 2021.

People on this 60 day extension of stay based on unable to travel due to COIVD-19 have a difficult time transitioning to a Non-B visa/ one year extension of stay based on employment.

(Note: I know there's a 60 day extension of stay based on visiting Thai family, however it sounds like the OP does not have Thai family).
Benjamin ******
You can get a 60 day extension of stay based on unable to travel due to COVID-19 at any immigration office (but only where you are staying).

You *MUST* close out an under consideration stamp at the same immigration office.

@Benjamin *****
hi Benjamin, are you 100% about only being able to get the stamp where you are staying. I’m planning on going to koh samui for a month from Phuket and would have needed to do my extension there before coming back to Phuket where I am registered living. Thanks.
Nigel *********
@Ry**
if you get your extension in Samui or Koh phangan then you will likely have your 60 day stamp on the same day for 1900thb. Your tm30 would have been submitted by the accommodation where you are staying.
Ryan *********
@Nigel *********************
thanks Nigel- good to hear. I usually get it in Phuket where I live but want to take a trip to samui and would need to do it there.

just double check on one of the Samui fb pages or the Kpng pages just before to double check just incase there are last minute changes, but it's been like that for severalonths now

@Ryan ********
>hi Benjamin, are you 100% about only being able to get the stamp where you are staying.

Define "staying". You're staying wherever the TM30 is filed. Most immigration offices require the TM30. If you get an under consideration stamp, you'd have to go back to the same immigration office.
Ryan *********
@Benjamin *****
thanks for your help.

I’m registered at my villa in Phuket and have been doing the Covid extension every two months.

So you know that I have to do it in Phuket where I am registered? Not samui where I’m going for a holiday..

The test is simple enough to get.

remember IF you apply for a covid exension in Chiang Mai you write a paper stating you will come back in 2 weeks to get the "loop closed" <- it CANNOT be done at another immigration office other than the one you applied at :O

SO

you either make the decision to hang tight in Chiang Mai until you get the loop closed on your under consideration stamp 2 weeks later

OR

you go to where ever you're going to and apply for the covid extension down there ;)
Mark ***********
ORIGINAL POSTER
@T**
, this is the answer I was looking for: "it CANNOT be done at another immigration office other than the one you applied at."

Are you sure about that? For example, I know that the "2 weeks" period is wrong, at least from my experience where it has been three weeks or so. Every changes and varies by office, eh?

If 2 weeks is correct somehow, then I'm in the clear. Also, I think that I once did this where I couldn't return for the stamp until AFTER my visa expired, and that was not a problem.

Also, once, I think they offered me "same-day service" for 3,000 Baht.
Tod *********
@Ma**
I'm 100% sure that you can't close out an "under consideration" stamp issued from an immigration office in one province at another immigration office in a different province.

I believe the people on Koh Phangan who now have their own immigration office can close out stamps at either the new KP office, the Samui office OR the Surat Thani office.

BUT

everyone else goes back to the office where you got the under consideration stamp to close out the covid extension.

In C/M they have you write on a piece of paper that you can come back in 14 days <- so you're not confused. :P

Now I have seen some offices ADD the under consideration stamp to your exiting extension (especially when going from a covid extension TO another covid extension) so it could be longer than 2 weeks before you go back it's just the under consideration period is 2 weeks.
Mark ***********
ORIGINAL POSTER
@T**
, thanks, that makes sense. I had considered that maybe they sent the paperwork to BKK where it would be processed centrally, (explaining the long wait?)

So, I guess I'll ride down to the islands, (likely Phuket...) arriving on about 8 July and run to the office. I should be good-to-go. Thanks.
Benjamin ******
@Mark **********
"Same day" service is another word for "bribe".

Different immigration offices have the under consideration stamp for different amounts of time. I've seen it range anywhere from one week to one month, depending on their workload.
