TLDR : Answer Summary
If you are on a 60-day visa exemption in Chiang Mai, you can apply to extend it for an additional 30 days at the immigration office. You should do this when you have 45 days remaining on your exemption. It is recommended to visit the immigration office at least a week before the expiration date to ensure you have ample time for processing. Make sure to have a TM30 form if you are staying at a hotel, as this is required for your registration.

the rules are 60 days +30. You just gotta pay for the 30 there are no rules that say you gotta wait till the last week.
