TLDR : Answer Summary
The discussion centers on whether individuals can open a WISE account while on a DTV (long-stay tourist visa) in Thailand, particularly using a rental agreement as proof of address. Many commenters clarify that while WISE facilitates money transfers and offers accounts with IBANs, obtaining a debit card while in Thailand is complicated due to residency requirements. Participants share personal experiences regarding setting up WISE accounts, the necessity of proof of address, and discuss alternatives for managing finances in Thailand without a local bank account.

Wise sucks, its run by imbeciles who don't comprehend taxation treaty law but only Wise policy.

Transfer too much and get it frozen, till you threaten Thai legal action. They know nothing about legal reporting limits and implement their own policy.

If you hold an NRE account in India just use your debit card to withdraw cash from any of the ATM and pay the 250 baht ATM fees, Krungsri bank you can withdraw 30k baht at 1 time, you paying just 8 USD for withdrawing 1000 USD, even Wise gonna charge you 1 percent on conversion fees and 2 percent variable fees

Although Wise is not technically a bank, it does offer banking services. I have a UK bank account number and sort code from Wise, which allows me to receive my pensions directly into my Wise account. They also offer automatic investments for your excess funds held in your Wise account. It is a lot more than a currency transfer service now.

WHat is your issue? I know you cannot send money from India to Thailand using Wise or open a Wise account from India. For a DTV, you have to show money in a bank account. It does not matter which bank account. You can show the equivalent amount of money in an Indian bank account. There is absolutely no connection between a DTV and a Wise bank account.

Its not for showing money its for holding the money from foreign income sources and spending it in Thailand, since you cannot open a bank account on DTV how and where do you receive money into in Thailand ?

Specially if you are planning on spending most of the year there without a bank account it's not a great idea or even sound to use forex and debit cards for such a long period.

Gaurav Sarma I have been living in Thailand with my US credit cards and ATM cards for five years, with no issues at all. Every 7-Eleven takes credit cards. I use credit cards wherever they are accepted and my US ATM card to withdraw cash from ATM machines. Use your home country's credit/debit cards. Indians often propagandize India's UPI system as the greatest invention since sliced bread. What happened? don't they work in Thailand. Every Chinese person I know in Thailand uses their Alipay/UnionPay to pay everywhere

If you are unable to open an account in India (you should be able to) then your not going to be able to open one while in Thailand as it will require your passport

A lot of people here seems to have no clue that Wise also offers local IBAN accounts, business IBAN accounts and debit cards.

I assume you want a debit card from wise issued in Thailand? They won’t mail a card to you other than what’s listed as your address on your account.

I did this, but I was already a customer from my home country and I asked customer support to change my address and they issued me a new card.

You use your country of residence to apply, so unless you've become a resident here, you can't use your Thai information.

The DTV is a tourist visa.

The majority of DTVers reside in Thailand more than 180 days, so they are residents (and tax residents)

Derek Lee yes, but good luck becoming an official resident when you're not allowed to have a bank account or ID number here.

No matter what Thai rules say on paper, in reality, you are still a resident of your own country, while you're here.

Steve Demir thank you for clarifying that. I was asking the same in my post if someone has done it using just the Thailand address or received an official tax-resident status on DTV

Like others say, go online and open an account. They may ask for proof of address (I assume in Thailand) as well as re-confirmation on the bank accounts you would send money to.

Frank Shevchuk You can't connect it to a Thai bank account, and they don't issue debit cards to Thai residents. Those who use Wise have already set up an account from Europe or North America where they have proof of residency and a bank account then they can send money to a Thai bank account or use their debit card from Thailand.
