TLDR : Answer Summary
The conversation discusses experiences of expats trying to open bank accounts in Thailand with a DTV visa. Users share mixed outcomes, with one successfully opening an account at Bangkok Bank after obtaining the necessary visa extensions, while others faced rejections citing the DTV visa's limitations. Additionally, some users mention alternative banking solutions like WISE for international transactions.

That is extremely funny, I had a similar situation, I want to pay taxes here in Thailand, I've paid someone to calculate it, the amount was more then 100k baht so I need to make a transfer from THAI bank( for less you can pay in cash), I'm going to a bank " Sorry can't open account for you". So does that mean I don't need to pay taxes? Amazing country 0% taxes for all people on DTV and ED visa đŸ€ŁđŸ€Ł

Unless they go back to the old 90s days where tax clearance was needed to exit the country, then I don't see any likelihood of taxation enforcement for DTV visa holders especially if you do border runs.

If you are asking does a DTV cut any ice with the banks so you can get an account open, that answer is NO it does not.

it's still a crap shoot as far as IF you can or can't get one open

What’s the reason to get a Thai bank account?I use WISE for all international transactions

hi there do you mind me asking if Wise is suitable for things like paying condo rent etc? (I assume you need to transfer the rent to the landlord’s Thai bank account) Or just small day to day expenses?

@Chloe **********
with WISE you can transfer it in real time to any Thai bank account
you can hold Thai baht there,you can change your own currency in a second to Thai baht if there is a good rate
you have a cc so you pay everything in the mall or restaurants with the local currency

thanks Ko, sounds like that pretty much replaces the need for a Thai bank account if it can do everything you need for living there. Will definitely look into to that!

you can hold there all main currencies
usd,aus Dollar,uk pounds,yen,euro,Swiss franc Thai baht,etc
.low fee and transparent rates,I use it for many years already,living abroad.

@Ko ******
however you still have to pay 220 THB for ATM withdrawals and don't get to use QR payments, so a real Thai bank account is still way better.

I live almost cashless
so I actually don’t really withdraw often
I only talk for myself 😏

the only other thing is that you can't get a virtual Thai bank account in Wise, like you can with several countries. This wouldn't affect most people, especially those in this group, who should not be getting paid in Thailand!

@Gerry *******
yes,that’s true
you can’t receive THB in the WISE account,but that’s not important to me,coz of I don’t earn any Thai currency.

@Ko ******
same. Wise is pretty awesome. Can't beat it for exchange.
