Can I use a family loan to meet the financial requirements for a Thailand DTV visa application?

DTV question - I qualify for this visa in everyway except the 500,000 bhat saved up. If my family loaned me the money just for the visa application process would that work? I would be sending my family the money back after the DVT was issued. Any advice on this?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user questions whether they can borrow money from family to meet the financial requirement of 500,000 THB for a DTV visa application. Responses indicate that some embassies only require the current balance in a bank account, and if this is sufficient, borrowing the money may be acceptable. However, applicants should be aware that regulations may vary by embassy, with some requiring proof of funds over several months. There are concerns that while borrowing might initially allow for visa application, ongoing compliance with financial requirements may cause issues later when re-entering Thailand.

They might ask for 3-6 months in statements, but as long as the most recent statement shows 500kTHB in the balance you will be fine. Some embassies only require the most recent statement, usually the case if you’re applying within the US.

I don’t understand Pablo. You don’t have 16k in the bank, how do you expect to live here? Are you a digital nomad?
Christopher ********
@Wayne *******
you don’t need that much savings in Thailand to get by
Wayne ********
@Christopher *******
you’re correct if you don’t live in any of the tourist areas I live on a Rice farm in North Central Thailand. my wife and I live very comfortably on a small amount. I have the money because I have a good pension, but I save way more than I spend every month.

@Wayne *******
the same way ppl live in America … a job. Is that part any of your business?
Wayne ********
@Angeil *******
if you are comparing Thailand to America, you know nothing about Thailand, besides if it’s any of your business, I only mentioned it because a lot of people think you can just come to Thailand and get a job without being aware of the visa requirements. Pablo didn’t seem to mind the question why should you?

@Wayne *******
Sir I’ve been in Thailand for a while. He asked a very specific question that you didn’t bother to answer either. Smart or not why are you questioning ppl about their finances. But I digress 😌

Probably need to make sure you have more than 500k in there, to allow for fluctuations in the exchange rates. Right now the US$ has jumped up because on an election, but its expected to weaken over the coming months, and as the incoming administration's fiscal become clearer, who knows what direction it will take. If tariffs and immigration restrictions are actually going to happen, the market will start thinking about inflation ticking up, and therefore interest rates going up, which strengthens the USD. But if not, then the USD remains lower, especially if the expectation is that interest rates will decline. Its quite a lot of money for people to maintain, untouched, for what, to avoid a border run. And then you see speculation like this:

Yes, but you'll need to find an embassy that will do it from current balance as a lot are now requesting 1-6 month of statements showing the 500k+.

However, something to bare is mind no-one knows how they will handle extensions and reentry going forward after the initial 6 months have passed. You may have to show you still have the funds, more bookings etc. So although you can "cheat" the system right now, it could very well cause you issues in the future

@Declan *********
it’s not really cheating the system.
Declan **********
@Pablo *******
it is technically cheating the system, you do not have the money and are borrowing it to met the requirements and returning it after visa is granted. Most embassies are now increasingly requesting months of bank statements for this exact reason.

No its technically not cheating the system. The official requirement is to show the amount in your account. It does not specify date ranges or where the money comes from. Thats my point. I get what you are trying to say though.

@Declan *********
it's valid 5 years
Declan **********
@Daniel ****
really? Oh wow... I thought it was only valid for 3 days 🤦🙄
Daniel *****
@Declan *********
you worry about reentry after the "inital 6 months" which is straight bs, it's valid 5 years period.
Declan **********
@Daniel ****
visa validity period doesn't mean shit mate. Having a visa does not guarantee you entry into the country. You can be asked at anytime by immigration to show you still meet the requirements of said visa. If you are unable to show what they request or no longer meet those requirements on which the visa was granted they can deny your entry and even void your visa under certain circumstances.

@Declan *********
having a flight ticket doesn't guarantee you will be on the flight as well. If you don't look like the last homeless beer tourist you will get in.

@Declan *********
true, but unlikely
Declan **********
@Ben ********
why is it unlikely? Within 2 weeks of it being launched most embassies tightened up the requirements because they felt rampant abuse was happening or going to start happening and have continued to tighten up the requirements since.

It's a glorified tourist visa and just like any other visa you can get, it doesn't guarantee you entry into Thailand and you can still be denied entry if an IO feels you are abusing it or do not meet the requirements for it. No one knows how the Immigration division will deal with extensions or re-entry going forward, but to believe it's unlikely they will want any type of proof on a 5 year visa that is extremely easy to get when they are getting more and more strict across the board is rather naive if you ask me.

You would file at the NY embassy. I only had to provide a copy of a present balance.

Yes it’s possible, there’s no required seasoning for the DTV.

@Jan *****************
no wrong , please check again . Immigration wants money to sit in account as long as you use that visa . 100 percent. Select Vietnam or Philippine

Where did you get this information?
Jan ******************
@Guddu ************
This is not correct. There’s no formal requirement regarding seasoning in the general requirements for a DTV. At some embassies you’ll only need to have the required funds in your bank at date when you apply, some require bank statements for 1-6 months for to apply, but you’ll don’t need to do seasoning after the visa is issued.

depends on the embassy

I am from United States and would be working this out from there. Thanks for the answers!

Check it further out as Bob and Brandon states. I know it has been done with borrowed money and here at the embassy in Washington DC as an example it says; “A copy of a recent saving or checking bank statement with an ending balance of no less than 500,000 THB or ($16,000 USD) that shows the applicant's name and date.”

Brandon ************
You would need to apply at an embassy that only looks at the current balance in your account. Some embassies want to see between 1-6 months of bank statements and you can't provide that, so you couldn't apply there.
Edna *******
@Brandon ***********
6 months if you can’t provide a bank letter. The US banks won’t do that, but will print out six months worth of statements. Or if you have a mobile phone and printer, you can provide your own.

@Edna ******
what’s this about a bank letter? I’m getting reviews from DC office and LA office that all you need to do is show the money, no 6 month seasoning.

I don't know what the policy is but you can try contacting the consulate in New York and see what they say. If they require more than you can show you might have to travel to SE Asia and apply at one of the Thai embassies there.
