TLDR : Answer Summary
With a retirement visa in Thailand, you are free to travel around the country without restrictions. The primary address linked to your visa is the one on your TM30, which you will need to report for your 90-day check-ins. If you move to a new location, you can file a change of address and submit a new TM30 to update your primary residence.

no issue traveling around thailand on ANY visa at all. Your primary address is fixed to the one you used for the retirement visa where the TM30 is filed and that's where you'd do 90 day reporting. but you can travel around

AND

if you moved to a new place, you could file a change of address and new TM30 and use that as your 'primary residence'.

this is my question in the same line. I want to retire in Thailand but not settle down for 9 months while I travel the whole country in 2-3 week stays from place to place and then sign long term lease. So if I understand your answer. I have to have a minimum 90 day lease to apply and process? And can I move around then. Will airbnb count? Or should I get a very inexpensive apartment and move around then and use it as my lease requirement and do my required 90 day reporting?

, or you can consider getting Non-OA from the Thai embassy in your home country as “retirement” visa for you instead of getting Non-O based on being over 50 inside Thailand.

most offices won't even let you start the process (of the initial 90 day Non-O and year extension) if you're not gonna be there to get thru it.. So I'd say IF you wanna travel around and are gonna get the 'retirement visa' inside the country sit tight and do that until you get the year extension, then travel to your hearts content..

you need to go TALK to your immigration office and see what they require to do the Non-O visa and year extension, some offices want you to have a long term lease, some will take a 3 month lease.

thanks that helps. If I don't have a primary residence, as I dont own or have long term rental at this stage, I could use a hotel that i regularly stay at as long as they are happy to issue the TM30

if you're thinking of getting a "retirement visa" inside the country <- as in starting from scratch getting the 90 day Non-O and then the year extension you're gonna keep the same address for at least the 3 months it takes you to get thru the process,

AND

keep in mind SOME offices require a long term rental contract (minimum 3 months) to even start the process of the initial 90 day Non-O and year extension.
