TLDR : Answer Summary
A user from the UK inquires about re-entering Thailand under a DTV visa after completing their soft power course. Community responses indicate that while the DTV visa is largely valid for 5 years regardless of course completion, re-entry may depend on immigration officer discretion. Some commenters advise that, despite having a valid visa, travelers could face questioning and potential denial based on their reasons for entry post-course. However, many assert that as long as travelers can justify their entry, they can generally obtain a 60-day visa exemption.
Your visa is still valid. Just buy a new flight ticket and return to Thailand.
This appears to be the first case we have seen, and we believe that something may be missing from the story. Immigration officers usually consider several factors such as visa history (previous ED visas, overstays, or a large number of border runs), insufficient funds to support yourself, lack of confirmed and paid accommodation in Thailand, or other issues. Not enough 20,000 THB in cash to support your stay, there are often many reasons behind such situations, and it can happen with any type of visa.
We have over 250 participants in our Soft Power course, and none of them have experienced any issues for almost the past two years.
Normally, we do not recommend this, but if this situation happens to you, you may consider using a VIP fast-track service or preparing all the necessary documents to clearly prove your reason for entering and staying in Thailand.
No, your DTV visa will generally not be automatically cancelled just because your Soft Power course (e.g., Muay Thai, cooking school) ends. As a 5-year, multi-entry visa, the DTV remains valid for the full period, allowing you to stay for up to 180 days per entry, with the option to extend for another 180 days while in the country.
The visa was issued for 5 years with a 6 months course. That's it. You've got a 5 year visa. Do you think people who get cosmetic surgery on a dtv ,when they come back in they say . Your going to need a nose job or dental implants if you want to continue the visa that you're already been issued.
CharmingGiraffe9403 Non-immigrant visas do not work that way though. You're getting a 1 year visa that can be cancelled if not fulfilling requirements (divorce, got fired, etc.). Now the question is, what are the real requirements of the DTV?
Anonymous participant think the point of pushing for visas like this is so they know who you are and your financial situation. By putting an end to people who want to stay long term legally thus putting an end to free border entrys . I think anyone on a 5 year dtv has nothing to worry about. But that's just my opinion of course.
Even the dim witted Thais who thought up the 5 years DTV duration must have foreseen that someone pretending to do a cookery or Muay Thai course isn't going to do so for 5 bloody years !
It is just an Elastoplast over the decades long border bouncing visa situation, somewhat acknowledging that getting some income is better than making it impossible for people under 50 to stay in Thailand long term.
Could be the IO wasn't serious, either having a laugh at the Indian guy's expense and/or holding out for a bribe. The guy's answer might just have taken the wind out of his sails?
I agree with the visa is valid for 5 years, the visa is sold by the Ministry of foreign Affairs.
At entry you deal with the Royal Thai Police Immigration Bureau and they decide if you can enter the country.
a Valid visa can give you a period of time in Thailand, it does not guarentee your entry.
I understand that every DTV holder thinks and advice that there is NO Immigration Officer allowed to to their job or has no knowledge about visa and entry into Thailand, but they need to go to the airport and explain there at the Immigration office.
THIS! Whilst I hope it doesn’t deter or restrict anyone, I can’t help but feel people are missing this very point. The visa is only as good as the IO and their supervisors decision.
Anonymous participant absolutely. This is why I personally had a slight reservation on soft power. If I did go that route I feel I’d keep booking courses just to keep it up. Last thing I want is to be pleading my case for a course that’s already ended. Fortunately I was lucky enough to go the work route so as long as I remain working, it should be good. Nothing guaranteed but I’d rather this way.
I can also see why they wouldn’t. I have to be fair and say if I was an IO and someone said they were coming on the visa for X course/ reason and I can see that the course ended 6 months ago. I’d probably refuse them too. It’d be like someone saying they’re coming to study, but they graduated from the school a year ago. Again, I don’t say this to deter anyone… just to provide open context and a viewpoint.
Agree! Until published that a DTV holder must continuously be enrolled upon a qualifying course for the whole five year duration there isn't any such requirement.
true, it is valid for 5-years, but if you got DTV based on soft power activities upon checking by IO it will get canceled if don’t continue soft power activities. Risk it for a biscuit.
So you are claiming an IO asked this person upon entry to show proof of ongoing SP activity - when he said he had none his DTV was cancelled?? Hearsay - show us evidence.
I’m not going to ask them for a copy of their passport page just because you want to see an evidence. You’re required to do soft power activities while in Thailand on a DTV visa granted for soft power activities or you’re risking your entry, or even your visa just like them. You got 99% chance that you won’t be even asked questions about it. Your visa your game, do what you want with it.
it doesn’t matter. Your visa, your risk. He was above 50, retired, didn’t want to continue Muay Thai, got it canceled, was told to get a proper visa, they let him in for 60 days. End of story
I have not heard of anyone being denied entry, as their soft power course is finished and they are not signed up for further activities. Have you seen any credible sources indicating this has happened?
yes. Upon checking by IO(which in fact usually they don’t) visa will get canceled. Moreover, if you abuse it you can get banned. Only because you got 5-year visa doesn’t mean that you can come 5 years based on soft power activities while not doing them.
untrue. Client came to my wife showing a canceled DTV and told the story. IOs told him that they can visit this time for 60 days but need to get a retirement visa so the client came to discuss it. However, they got DTV soft power because they lack of 800,000 in savings and have not enough pension due to being self-employed entrepreneur for almost entire life to even mix both savings+pension. It’s the reason they got a DTV soft power. They were unaware that they need to continue soft power activities because trolls on this group advice that everyone will be okay and needs it just one time.
