I am converting to a marriage visa extension when I return to Thailand this month. I need to send the 400K baht to Thailand for my bank account which is not yet open. The rates are very favorable right now. Can I send the money to my wife's acct and then transfer it to mine when I open it or does it have to come straight from my account in the US?

TLDR : Answer Summary
A user asks if they can send 400,000 baht to their wife's account for a marriage visa extension in Thailand, given that their own bank account is not yet open. Several comments clarify that for a marriage visa extension, the funds can come from anywhere, including the spouse's account, with no specific requirement for the money to be transferred from the applicant's overseas account. The conversation also mentions that this rule differs from other visa types like the retirement visa, where funds must originate from outside Thailand.

You might have a problem if you ever wanted to repatriate the funds; you would need proof they originated from overseas and if you’re bouncing it around domestic accounts, that might be an issue…

Yes, for the type O visa extension based on Thai wife there is no requirement as to where the money comes from. For the retirement visa extension it must come from overseas, but not for the marriage visa extension. The money can come from anywhere, so sending it to your wife's account first is okay.

@Kool ******
no requirement for it to come from overseas for retirement extension if using lump sum method. That only applies to acquiring the Non-O inside Thailand

it's a new marriage visa not an extension. I'll be converting from a TR visa. Correction, according to the instructions I got it is called an extension because you are extending the visa you came in on based on marriage.

there are no restrictions on where the money comes from. Lots of people already living in Thailand do this all the time. Some I know go from a type B work visa/extension to a marriage visa, as you can work with a marriage visa. They simply use the money they have saved working to meet the financial requirement. If you have your own business the financial requirements for the business are cut in half if you are married, and why many change. The number of required Thai employees goes from 4 to only 2 if married.

@Kool ******
, the last clause on the number of Thai employees depends on the province in question, and also if it is cut because of marriage.
Kool *******
@Henrik ***
as I said. The province in question doesn't have anything to do with marriage, so I chose not to mention it.
Henrik ****
@Kool ******
, that is true, but how many Thai employees are required for a Non B depends on the province. Some require 4, some 2, and some will cut it half if married, others won't.

The 400k for a marriage extension can come from anywhere. So transferring it from wife's thai account is fine.

Extension is not the same as getting the visa. I know for retirement visa to convert from tourist or visa exempt to Non-O inside Thailand requires proof the money was transferred from overseas. The extensions do not require that. Unfortunately I don't know if that's the same for marriage Non-O.

So be sure not to give advice about the incorrect thing, a visa conversion is very much not the same as an extension.

. Read the ops post again and my reply again and then tell me what was incorrect about it. He said marriage extension which is the only situation you need 400k in a thai bank account. The origin is irrelevant.
Brandon ************
@Steven **************
he said he's converting to a marriage visa. Conversion to visa and extension are not the same thing. He'll never even get to that point if he can't meet the requirements to do the conversion.
Steven ***************
@Brandon ***********
. Read it again.. what part of "marriage visa extension" confuses you??

AND when has 400k ever been needed for a spouse VISA??

"The 400k for a marriage extension can come from anywhere. So transferring it from wife's thai account is fine."

HE CANNOT GET AN EXTENSION UNTIL HE GETS A VISA. Do you know the exact requirements to convert from tourist visa to Non-O based on marriage inside Thailand? If you don't know, then you're giving bad advice. He cannot get an extension until he gets the visa. If the non-O based on marriage has similar requirements to the non-O based on retirement, the money shown to meet proof of funds to convert from tourist visa to Non-O visa must come from overseas, then you telling someone the money can come from anywhere is wrong and will cause them huge problems.
Steven ***************
@Brandon ***********
. How many times do you need to be told that I responded to an EXTENSION. read my answer again. You quoted me and still don't get it..

Not my fault the op worded his question wrong and failed to tell us he is entering on a tourist visa until AFTER people replied..

Do YOU know? If you don't, take your own advice.

In your own words.. visa and extension are different. I replied to extension.. ffs..

in Chiang Mai it doesn't need to show international transaction some other places like Bangkok it does need to show FTT

for the marriage visa and extension the money can come from anywhere. There is no requirement where it comes from

. I think so too.. because I've done it 4 times on 4 yearly extensions. All they want to see is 400k minimum balance for 2 months prior to applying day.

@Steven **************
what about the very first time? When you got your visa
Steven ***************
@Stéfan *******
. I got my original visa in my home country. They didn't care where it came from as long as the account was mine. And it was far less than 400k. They also said I could use money in thaibaccount if I had one.

I already stated that.

you have to send to your own account from your home country. It has to show as an international bank transfer.

@Karim **************
Not for a marriage visa.
Vinny **************
From your account from your country

@Vinny *************
only monthy income methods must prove international transfer. All the 400 000 needs is to be in an account in his name only and seasoned for the required time.
