Can I transfer 400,000 baht into a new Thai bank account from my wife's account for a marriage-based Non-O visa extension?

Hi everyone,

I have a question regarding the 400,000 baht I need to have in a Thai bank account for a one-year extension based on marriage. My Thai wife and I with our two kids are permanently moving to Thailand at the end of August and I will try to obtain a Non-O visa based on marriage. Unfortunately, I don’t currently have a Thai bank account that I can transfer 400,000 baht into before we come to the country and I will need to open one once we are in Thailand and out of quarantine. Here is where the problem starts. By that time I will have closed my bank accounts in the Middle Eastern country where we currently live and won’t really have any other account but the Thai one that I will have just opened. Meanwhile, I will transfer all my money into my wife’s Thai bank account. My question is: Can I transfer 400,000 baht into my new Thai account from my wife’s Thai account for the one-year extension? I suspect this is not allowed, so are there any other options I have if I don’t have a foreign account when I open my Thai account?

Thank you!

TLDR : Answer Summary
A user is inquiring about the requirement of having 400,000 baht in a Thai bank account for a one-year visa extension based on marriage. They are concerned about not having a Thai bank account before arriving in Thailand and the feasibility of transferring the required amount from their wife’s account to their new Thai account once opened. Several comments provide guidance, indicating that there are no strict requirements to prove the source of money and suggest managing the transfer as outlined.

Thank you so much for this information, Tod Daniels. Much appreciated! This is such a relief for me.

There is no proof of where the money came from when you apply for the year extension so you can transfer it into your wifes account, come here, get out of quarantine and then open a bank account in your name only and move to the money into it no problem

Get the 90 day Non-O visa based on marriage to a thai from the thai consulate in your country before you come here and then apply for the year extension when you have 30 days or less left on the 90 day stamp you get when you enter the country.
