TLDR : Answer Summary
When applying for a Thai marriage visa, the requirement of having 400,000 baht in a bank can be met by funds deposited in a Thai bank account, and does not necessarily need to originate from abroad. However, if utilizing the 40,000 baht monthly income method for proof of funds, you must transfer this amount from abroad unless you hold a valid work permit in Thailand. The income must be deposited into a Thai bank account in your name for at least 12 months prior to applying for a visa extension.

I think you are confusing TWO separate ways you can show proof of funds for a marriage visa/extension.

One way is all banked money and that's where you bank 400K baht in a thai bank account in your name only

The other way is monthly income and (if you don't work here and can't get the embassy letter) that's where you transfer IN to the country to a thai bank account in your name only a minimum of 40K baht a month each month every month for the previous 12 months before you apply for a year extension.

That means you cannot use monthly income to get the initial 90 day non-O visa because you don't have 12 months of transfers your only option is banked money method for the 90 day Non-O and the first year extension,

AFTER that you can use monthly income by bringing in the 40K a month for the next year and get your subsequent extension the following year that way. if you want

if you had started the transfers a year (or more) in advance could you use that for your first extension?

no one has ever done it to my knowledge so I couldn't say. In theory there's nothing prohibiting it but you'd have to get the 90 day Non-O visa before you came here because you're not gonna get it with monthly transfers even if you have a year of them. People were declined the application who had 12 months of incoming transfers.

i thought it was 65k a month not 40k

the O/P specifically said

retirement is 800K or 65k a month

marriage is 400k or 40k a month

There is nothing in the immigration rules that states the 400K baht banked money method of proof of funds has to originate from abroad.

It can come from inside the country

What you can't do is use the 40K baht a month monthly income method with domestic transfers unless you're legally working here with a valid work permit.

If you are using the 40K baht monthly income method (and you don't legally work here, and you don't come from a country whose consulate issues the affidavit of income from abroad notary letter) you HAVE to transfer that 40K from abroad into a thai bank account in your name only each month, every month for the previous 12 months before you apply for an extension.

If from a country that doesn't provide an affidavit and the money (40k/m for marriage extension or 65k/m for regular Non O extension) is transferred in every month for the previous 12 months, does it have to sit and stay in the Thai bank account untouched or can it be used for monthly living expenses, spent on 'stuff', invested elsewhere, withdrawn as cash and put into a different Thai account and transferred elsewhere?

Be careful when you say regular Non O instead of over 50/retirement Non O. There are many reasons for a Non O(ther) besides marriage and retirement.

@Ian *******
nope, just show it was transferred in, you can spend it as you want there is no 'minimum balance' you need to keep
