Can I use a joint account with my wife to meet the 400,000 THB requirement for a marriage visa extension in Thailand?
Hi, I normally get a visa extension based on retirement, but I'm thinking that next time I will get a marriage extension, my question is, can the 400000bht, be in a joint account with my wife? I am planing on leaving the money in the account permanently.

Why would you not want to continue your retirement visa. The marriage visa Is much more intrusive meaning it cannot be approved at your local immigration office and you need to take pictures of you and your wife in and outside of your house and I think a a recommendation from two neighbors with copy of their I. D. Cards

retirement extensions are fairly easy as long as you transfer the equivalent of 65,000 Baht a month if you don't want to put 800,000 Baht in the bankJames ********

and at half the 800,000 Thai baht required to be banked ...vs 400,000 is workable for many expats.

Some offices are resistant to swapping from an over 50 ext to marriage ext. I would check with them.

My IO tried to persuade me to switch to retirement visa. It is less work for them as well.

I thought the first extension on a visa had to be for the same purpose as the visa was issued for. So if you enter on 90 day non-o that's issued on the basis of marriage then your first extension off that visa should also be on the basis of marriage. The next year you can change to retirement as long as you satisfy the requirements.

if it doesn't mention marriage anywhere you should be fine. I only mentioned it because you stated it was for marriage above.

I changed to extension based on marriage with the 40k monthly option after many years of retirement extension in Dec 2019 at Hua Hin. No problem. Changed back again December 2020 Hua Hin, no problem although initially downstairs wanted evidence i had 400k in bank three months after last extension--but not applicable. I didn't mention it upstairs, nor did they. I had earlier in Bluport been advised (when i checked about this conversion) to get the certificate of still being married at the Ampur. (Presumably as a divorce could be a reason for changing to retirement)

Yes it should be possible, but check with your office as your probably aware each office can interpret visa extensions differently. I've swapped 3 times for different reasons.

I have just returned to Thailand on a non O visa based on marriage, as my retirement extension ran out while I was in England, will I still be able to get a retirement extension, even though I entered Thailand on a marriage non O?

That's why I will probably get a retirement extension, I only thought about getting a marriage extension, if I could do it with a joint bank account, as I can't I will just stick with what I have done in the past Bobby ********
Colin Chaffers. That's true but the financial commitment is double, plus you can get a WP on a marriage visa

Check with your local immigration office. Some accept joint account, but in that case you have to make the amount double.
