If you are unable to complete an e-visa application online can a tourist visa ( for forty days) be acquired while in Thailand. I am from the USA. Thanks

TLDR : Answer Summary
It is not possible to obtain a tourist visa while inside Thailand. Instead, US passport holders receive a 30-day visa-exempt stamp upon arrival, which can be extended for another 30 days at a local immigration office for a fee. To board the flight to Thailand, travelers may need proof of leaving the country within the 30 days, and some airlines may require an onward ticket.

Your 30-day visa-exempt stamp can be extended another 30 days at any Immigration office for 1900 baht cash and a passport photo.

You shouldn’t have a problem with Immigration. But, as you said, the airlines are supposed to deny boarding if you don’t have an onward ticket. Some airline clerks ask, some don’t. If they do ask, you can “rent” an onward ticket from a website or you can buy a refundable ticket, then cancel it after your flight.

it be whatever immigration office serves the area where your are staying. You will receive an entry stamp allowing you to stay for 30 days, then you go to your local immigration and extend for another 30 days and get that stamp. Then you'll have to leave.

I said any Immigration office. They’re all over the country. Go to the nearest one. Some require you to be on your last week. Others will let you extend sooner.

You can ONLY get a tourist from a Thai embassy before you travel to Thailand. You cannot get one when you arrive or when you're in Thailand.

If you arrive without a visa and a US passport you'll receive a 30 day visa exempt stamp. You can apply one time from your local immigration office for a 30 day extension.

You might need to check with your airline as they might not let you board your flight without proof of leaving Thailand within 30 days if you don't have a visa.

yes. Or border bounce for a new stamp. It might be difficult to switch to an education visa in only 60 days. Your school has to apply to the ministry of education for permission which can take 3-6 weeks and then you still need 14-21 days left on your stay to be able to apply for the visa.
