I’m flying into BKK from the United States. Can I ask for a 60 day tourist visa stamp or do they only allow 30 days? I’m moving to Thailand and will apply for a O retirement visa after I get the bank setup with the 800,000 baht.

TLDR : Answer Summary
A US citizen cannot obtain a 60-day tourist visa stamp on arrival in Thailand. Instead, they can receive a 30-day visa exemption stamp. To secure a 60-day tourist visa, it is recommended to apply for a Single Entry Tourist Visa in advance through the Thai embassy or the eVisa system before traveling. The 30-day exemption can be extended for an additional month at an immigration office for a fee.

You can apply for a 60 day visa from the Thai embassy in America or you can get a 30 day visa exemption stamp on arrival in Thailand. Either are eligible for a single 30 day extension at an immigration office inside Thailand for a fee of 1900 baht.

Based on you trying to move to Thailand and transfer to a retirement visa I would suggest you get the 60 day visa just to be sure you have lots of time.

Opening a bank account takes about 45 minutes. Not sure what "wired" is. An international bank transfer takes a few hours.

You as a US citizen cannot get any visa at the entry point. You need to apply for a Single Entry Tourist Visa which gives you 60 days upon entry to Thailand in advance of your travelling to Thailand. You can apply for it eVisa system (

while you are in US.

Without any proper visa that you get before you fly, you only can be stamped into Thailand for 30 days on visa-exempt.

As others mentioned, you need to have certain days remaining with your current stamp as of the application date for an initial in-country Non-O visa based on being over 50, many require you to have 15 days or more calendar days, some 15 business days.

How many days you need depends on how quickly you can settle down and get prepared for the application.

If you think 30 days is not enough, get SETV before you fly. Less an official fee for a 60-day stay, less hassle with the airline to travel on a one-way ticket, and no need to spend one day at the immigration office to make your stay extended.
