TLDR : Answer Summary
Visitors to Thailand can obtain a visa exemption stamp for 60 days upon arrival, which is available to citizens of 93 eligible countries, including the USA. After 60 days, travelers may apply for a 30-day extension at an immigration office. Alternatively, travelers can apply for a standard tourist visa in their home country prior to their trip; this visa also allows for a stay of 60 days, extendable by 30 days. For those planning to leave Thailand and re-enter, another 60-day visa exemption may be granted upon each new entry.

It is visa excempt.

You can leave the country and get an automatic 60 on entry, it’s not a visa. It’s visa exempt.

Depends on the visa you have and passport you hold if no visa 60 days on arrival but apply for 30 day extention.

Assuming you're from one of the 93 countries that are eligible for Visa exemptiom, you will be allowed a visa-free entry for 60 days (with a possibility to extend that with another 30 days at an Immigration office for 1900 thb). That means you wont have a visa - You get a stamp in your passport when you enter Thailand.

It is also possible to apply for a tourist visa from your homecountry before you travel... A tourist visa allow the same time of stay as the visa exemption (60+30 days). There are no tourist visa that give you 90 days from start... you will need to get an extension to get a total of 90 days.

If travelling without visa, you may (or may not) be asked to show an onward ticket out of Thailand within 60 days from your arrival (i.e. you should be able to show a ticket if asked by the airline and/or by the Immigration officer at the airport).

If you travel with a tourist visa, that you applied for in your homecountry before your trip, you need proof of onward travel within 90 days from your arrival date.

There are other visas as well, that might grant you more days, but you need to research that on your own. Check for information on the web for the Thai Embassy in your homecountry:

You will receive a 60 day visa exemption stamp on arrival and can then go to an immigration office and extend it for another 30 days after you've entered the country.

If you enter on visa exemption you’ll get a 60 days visa exemption which can be extended with additional 30 days locally. If you leave and re-enter you’ll get another 60 days visa exemption.

For both entries your airline might require a an onward ticket within 60 days.

@Minuiteman ******
everyone coming from uk gets the 60 days stamp on visa
Brandon ************
@Gary ******
Not everyone coming from the UK. Just departing from a country doesn't mean anything. They would need to have a passport from the UK.

there are 90 countries can have the 60 days stamp on entrance of Thailand

60 on arrival. Then apply for 30 extension. Depending on what country you come from.

@Steve ********
Correct , but from 1st of December most countries are going to need a ETA pass to enter

Thailand making things difficult again, when will they learn
Henrik *****
That is just a rumour, it hasn’t been through Parlament, and has to be publiced in Royal Gazette, before in can take effect.
Steve *********
@Gary *****
nothing is in black and white about the ETA. if it comes in effect get it on line.
Gary ******
@Steve ********
Yeah , I know , but why do they keep changing things , the Thai foreign ministry must lay awake at night and think up ways to make it harder for tourists to bring their money to Thailand
Jim ********
@Gary *****
They're coming into line with most other countries. Australia has used the ETA for years
