Hi everyone,

I have a question regarding the Certificate of Residence. Is it possible to obtain a Certificate of Residence while my visa/status is still under consideration (I have an “under consideration” stamp)?

I’m planning to buy a car, so I need to know if this will be an issue.

Thanks in advance!

TLDR : Answer Summary
The discussion involves the possibility of obtaining a Certificate of Residence in Thailand while the individual's visa status is marked as 'under consideration'. Various comments confirm that one can apply for the Certificate of Residence regardless of the visa status, as it pertains more to the address registration rather than visa permission. There are mixed opinions about the implications of the visa situation while purchasing a car, but overall, experiences suggest that it is possible to obtain the certificate and proceed with a car purchase provided the applicant meets certain criteria.

Go to immigration ask what documents they require as it varies. fill in the form and wait your turn in the queue.it is valid for 28 days, and do not forget a Blue Pen and three Passport photos.

It will end in tears if you do not get your Visa so be warned

A residence certificate has nothing to do with your visa or permission to stay. It is solely linked to your address and TM30 registration. The required period of residence before it is issued may vary between immigration offices.

Jan Kenneth Nesland I doubt any country will release a certificate of residence if there is no visa backing it up

The visa is instrumental to have utilities contracts, (local) licence, bank account and... residence benefits (and burdens)

Bruno Vaglienti We’re talking about Thailand and its immigration offices, which issue residence certificates regardless of visa type. I’ve obtained several myself on visa exemption over the years for driving licences, vehicle purchases, and opening bank accounts.

That said, the specific requirements do vary, particularly regarding how long you have stayed or your residential arrangement before they issue it.

John Bulmer quite difficult immigration laws and the uk from my experience very awkward. My wife had to wait another 6 months before she received a national insurance certificate. Look more at this as the uk has a treaty with thailand 🇹🇭 it’s unusual. Most lady’s have to prove that they will return to thailand and haven’t been working bar and can support themselves and you may have to inject her bank book with cash. Mine initially came to the uk with a fiancé visa. Everycase is vetted but I wish you good luck 🤞

I think it should be ok.

They will tell you if not.

You can buy the car without COR, but cannot transfer to your name without one.

Car new or second hand?

If new, it takes a month to get the number plates anyway.

Maybe get that visa first before buying a car. Common sense

Todd Capron His visa status doesn't matter for buying a car. You can do it with visa exemption as long as you provide a residence certificate.

Jan Kenneth Nesland I wouldn't buy a car if I am not certain I can stay in the country

Unless one is prepared to leave it un utilised while staying out of the country for long periods

Jan Kenneth Nesland read the post. Visa status “under consideration “. If rejected….then what. A residence certificate is mute

Todd Capron Under consideration is a standard status for marriage-based extension applications, as the Immigration Office may conduct further checks, including home visits. However, this has nothing to do with a residence certificate. I've obtained several residence certificates myself on visa exempt for things like driver's licenses and purchasing motorcycles.
