Looking for help, currently go through the process to start my 3rd year of learning Thai. Not worried about this. I'm under 50 and already go through a certain school. AFTER this year tho I know it is supposed to end since it will b 3 years and that is the max. Heard u can change languages but do not want that. I think Ed visa is easiest way to stay. So my question is since I just GOT a NEW passport does this give me 3 more years or do they keep an electronic record and this is just wishful thinking. Can't blame me for trying. Any help would be great and sorry so long of a post!

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is concerned about the expiration of their ED visa after three years of studying Thai and wonders if obtaining a new passport allows them to extend their stay for another three years. Community comments clarify that immigration keeps electronic records of ED visas, so simply changing passports won't reset their visa eligibility. Users share their experiences with the Thai education system and the visa renewal process.

I did the one year Thai course in phangan at kpt. They told me I can do 6 months more and that’s it. It’s a shame as I never missed a class and genuinely studied. I would gladly keep going but so many people milked the system and never turned up it ruined it for the rest of us. Would be easily solved if immigration just gave a short test and those that don’t pass don’t get a renewal. As usual immigration used a big hammer to solve a simple problem.

I would have gladly gone every day but at the school I went to that wasn’t an option. 4 hours a week is all that’s offered unless you’re prepared to pay for private tuition. I think 12 started and only 2 finished.

That is an official language, I don't see the problem.

Of course u have to self study, then practice outside. Hence is the reason I can Thai 40%. Google Translate SUCKS with most translations too. Also even companies like Rosetta Stone stopped teaching Thai.

Let me see, I want to learn but only want to spent max 8 hours a week? You answered the problem yourself. Genuine students spent more hours a day in the classroom.

I hear ya Robert but it is not an easy language at all. Going to school 2 days a week, maybe 4 for 2 hours is hard to Master anything. The language test was a joke, girl does real estate and has customer who took test. He failed and genuinely speaks and reads full Thai.

They did and almost nobody past. Solution a big hammer. Now there are some people who are genuine students. But Immigration think 1,5 year should be enough to speak, read and write decend Thai. I know a language school in the Netherlands who teach this in 6 weeks.

Use the 'turn on notifications for this post' option. It's there for a reason. ;)

so this is just a way to get more visas, and not a way to take more than 1 year of classes?

Yeah so far so good. Been going to school 2 years. My school handled all paperwork, did the initial Laos run, but after that easy peasy. Go to Jomtien Imm every 3 months. Rinse and repeat. You can leave the country once during that year but make sure u get paperwork first BEFORE u leave country. Knock on wood haven't had any issues. I was just curious for NEXT Year cause it is supposed to stop after 3 years. Even now I am only 40% Thai verbal, 20% reading and much less writing haha

@Robert ******
thank you. So it seems to me that I should talk to other schools. I just took my old schools word for it and started volunteering.

The school has to provide you with the papers to get the Ed Visa, if the school says we can not provide you with new papers to get another ED Visa without changing to another course the school is correct and not misinforming. It is the school who applies and get the papers from the Ministry of Education and the school now the rules.

I took one year and can speak and write a little. I would love to take more classes but thought it wasn't possible without taking half Japanese and half advanced Thai. I'm still confused as to if I was misinformed or not
Robert *******
It is not for selling more visa's. it is introduced because lots of students studying Thai langauge could not even say hello after claiming they spent 3 years in school.

I copied this out of comment on this page: "The way it works for an ED visa for a private school is like this;

You get the paperwork from the school and the Ministry of Education to go to a thai consulate in a neighboring country and apply for a 90 day Non-Immigrant Type ED visa". So as long as you have the paperwork from the school and the letter from Ministry of Education you should get another ED visa.

What is the name of your school? I took 1 year of Thai and wanted to take advanced classes but was told I can only take 1 year of Thai and had to switch to another language and do

Thai Consulate or Embassy don't have a database with details. Immigration has, they will notice all the ED Visa's in your previous passport.
