Is there a way to get a an additional 30 day extension on a 30 day exemption upon arrival? My situation is that I have to send my passport out for renewal to US embassy from Thailand, and it will take 6-8 weeks. Currently in Thailand, and my 90 TR visa expires in a few weeks, so was planning to do border run or quick flight to KL and back.

TLDR : Answer Summary
Yes, you can obtain a 30-day extension on a 30-day visa exemption upon arrival in Thailand with a US passport. Additionally, some travelers have opted for a border run or obtained a 60-day tourist visa from nearby countries such as Cambodia while waiting for passport renewal.

I just went through this process. I went to Phnom Penh and got a 60 day tourist visa to enter Thailand and then immediately sent my passport off. Turn around time was about 5

weeks.

did you get the 60 day at the US embassy? I've done it twice online and it takes 2-3 weeks

@Adam *******
the Royal Thai Embassy in Phnom Penh took 4 business days to issue mine (they hold your passport during processing)

You can get one 30 day extension off a TR entry or visa exempt entry with a US passport.

He’s already done one extension for his TR, so that leaves him with the visa exemption alternative, but he will have a problem with the 6-8 weeks.

yes, but can I get that extension within the first couple of days from the immigration office? On my current visa, they made me come back on the date it expired.

@Adam *******
Varies, In Bangkok and other immigrations you can, but ex Jomtien just issues extension the last week.

@Adam *******
depends where you are in Thailand. Jomtien are I think the ones that you come back near the end but if you can explain to them they will surely make an exception

@Adam *******
That’s dependant on the office you use to get the extension. Most allow within 30 days. Some like Jomtien, Koh Samui only allow within the final week.

Haven’t heard of any requiring “on the last day” but it is office specific.
