Hello,

I'm flying from Melbourne Aus to BKK in around 2 months (July 19). I'm staying 60 days until Sep 17.

Can I get a TR visa upon arrival at the airport? then extend another 30 days mid trip?

Or, do I need to apply for all the visa stuff whilst I'm in Australia and wait for it to be approved.

The Thai Consulate in my city is closed since COVID.

Cheers all!

TLDR : Answer Summary
The original poster inquires about the possibility of obtaining a Tourist Visa (TR) upon arrival in Thailand, despite the closure of the local Thai Consulate. Comments clarify that they will receive a 30-day visa-exempt entry at the airport, which can be extended for an additional 30 days. It is recommended to apply for a Single Entry Tourist Visa before traveling for less hassle. The conversation also highlights the differences between the Sydney consulate's online application system and the E-Visa process. Additionally, there is a discussion regarding a potential one-day overstay based on the travel dates.

Will you actually be landing in Thailand on July 19th or July 20th?

I ask because I think that from July 19th to September 17th is 61 days in Thailand rather than 60 (they count the day of arrival as day 1 rather than as day 0).

Yes that's right.... will I have to pay a 1 day overstay fine at the airport? already booked and calculated incorrectly.... or would the airline change it?

That's unfortunate.

I don't think that the airline would change it without you initiating the change, although they may make a fuss about it, in which case you could point out that you can extend your visa for 30 days in country (if you're on an Australian passport). Although, if they offered a free or cheap change, I would take it.

You shouldn't have to pay a fine for 1 day overstay but you will get a note in your passport... as long as you don't get caught before getting to the airport. Get caught and it's another world.

If your flight out on the 17th is in the early hours of the morning e.g. 1am or 2am, etc you could go through immigration a little early on the 16th to avoid being on overstay.

, Sydney has an online application system on its own. It is NOT the same as E-Visa which you get a no-sticker visa with notification by email.

E-Visa system completes all processes online.

While Evisa is a no-sticker visa, with the Sydney system you NEED to get an actual sticker visa put on your passport. You need to send your passport by postal mail. They are totally different systems.

Sydney application link is here

You cannot get Tourist Visa in Thailand including airports. You can enter on visa-exempt entry for 30days and it is eligible for 30days tourism extension. You still have enough time, better to get a Single Entry Tourist visa before you fly. The embassy/Consulate in Australia accepts application by postal mail.

It is much less hassle for your itinerary if you are with SETV than with a visa-exempt entry.
