TLDR : Answer Summary
A marriage visa in Thailand, specifically the NON-O type, can typically be extended for a year rather than just 90 days. The extension requires maintaining a minimum deposit of 400,000 THB in a Thai bank account. Some community members noted that the standard extension period is up to 60 days from the initial 90-day entry, while others discussed the pathway to citizenship for foreign females married to Thai males. Seeking advice from an immigration lawyer is recommended for clarity on the process.
NON-O RETIREMENT VISA RESOURCES / SERVICES
  • Go to the Retirement Visa Section for information on requirements, including age restrictions, financial requirements, and necessary documentation.
  • For immediate assistance, contact Thai Visa Centre directly via LINE at @ThaiVisaCentre or Email them.
  • Explore recent discussions by using the Non-O Retirement Visa tag in the search box at the top of the page.

If you are married to a MALE Thai national, I highly recommend getting a one year extension of stay based on marriage. This can be used as a pathway to citizenship. It is extremely easy for foreign females married to Thai males to become citizens.

Thank you for the response. Do you have personal experience in a similar situation or know someone that I can talk to about this process? I am married to a Male thai national. I've never heard of that route though, so I'm not sure where to start.

. The yearly extension process is identical to a foreign husband application minus the money. You'll need to be in Thailand on continuous long term extensions to go down the citizenship path anyway. Be wary of agents, some are dodgy. If you want absolute clarity ,spend an hour talking with an immigration lawyer here. It's worth a couple of thousand baht. Agents have no legal recourse here if they misinform you.

Out if curiosity, how and why is it different from being married to a Thai woman?

I honestly have no clue. Just curious how that works.

thank you for the response. this is done the same way a tourist visa is extended for 30?

for 60 days is about the same as extending tourist visa. 1900b and don't need any bank account.

. Yearly extension is the same price and virtually the same paperwork as a 60 day ext.

However it let's you leave and re enter Thailand as often as you want for a year, provided you get a re entry permit before leaving , or your extension will cancel.

this is very helpful! Thank you so much, have you done this yourself or did you use an attorney?

. I'm married to a Thai woman. If you have all the paperwork ,it's easy. You don't need an attorney. The reason I mentioned it is immigration here is famous for not understanding the rules themselves. You'll get different answers to same questions. If you meet all the paperwork requirements, it very straightforward, especially for a foreign wife, its tougher for foreign husband's because of the financial requirements. I don't know why it's that way... probably a cultural thing. I'm on my 4th yearly extension and the only headache I ever had was the money thing, which is something you don't need to worry about.

An attorney will at least explain the process clearly and give you a list of documents needed and forms to fill out.

I am married to a thai citizen

You cannot extend for 90 days. A non immigrant O visa based on marriage can only be extended for 1 year. You need 400k in a Thai bank in your name to do so.

It can also be extended for 60 days based on visiting Thai dependant relatives.

. No she doesn't. Foreign wife's of thai men don't need the 400k. There's no financials for women.
