What is the process for extending a tourist visa in Thailand and how does re-entering affect my stay?

Hello,

Canadian coming to Thailad for just shy of four months.

My visa plan is as follows:

Get 60 day tourist visa in Canada, before arrival in Thailand.

Get the 30 day extention as 60 day tourist visa ends.

Leave Thailand as the extension ends (so 90 days in Thailand so far). When i return to Thailand, I will automatically get a stamp for another 30 days? Is this correct?

How long do I need to leave Thailand for? I will likely leave for a couple of days, but is leaving and returning on the same day an option?

It looks like the multi entry visa would eliminate my trip to extend my 60 day visa for another 30 days. But considering the cost difference for the single / multi visa, I think I am fine to do the trip to extend my 60 day visa.

Am I correct to assume I would have no 90 day check in with this scenario?

Thanks 😎

TLDR : Answer Summary
A Canadian expat plans a 60-day tourist visa trip to Thailand, including a 30-day extension and seeks clarification on re-entering Thailand for another 30 days after leaving. Comments confirm that leaving Thailand for a day or two can grant an additional visa stamp, and there is no 90-day check-in requirement for tourist visas.

You have a workable plan.

There is no "how long do I have to be out of thailand" time, you can bounce out and right back if you wanted to.

Just make sure you bounce out and back at the correct border so you don't get stuck coming back in.

You aren't fooling anyone at passport control stamping back in after just a few days out of country, they will know all you're trying to do is get another free 30 days in thailand 😛

There is no 90 day reporting on tourist visas, or visa exempt entries, you can't stay IN the country on the same visa/extension long enough to have to do it

Thanks for the reply.

What do you mean by “correct border.” I will likely fly out of one of the two major airports in BKK, visit a neighboring country for a couple of days, and then fly back to the same airport in BKK.

I guess anything is possible, but is it likely I will get the 30 day stamp on my return to BKk? I’m sure I am not fooling them, but are they more likely to give me the 30 days, or not give it to me?

Thanks Tod.

keep in mind both Don Mueang and Suvarnabhumi are tough airports IF they think you're living here on tourist visas/free stamps.

Now seeing as you'll only have one tourist visa and an extension when you come back in you should get in fine on a free entry

What I meant was for people doing those land bounces about picking the correct border to come back in via

Appreciate the info. I remember you from another group, and I'm talking around 5 years ago. Your comment to some guy was..."Gear down big shifter." If we're being honest here, I'd have to admit I've used that a few times. So...credit to you!
