TLDR : Answer Summary
Yes, as an Australian passport holder, you can apply for a 30-day extension at a local Thai Immigration office before your initial 30 days expire. You can go on the 28th day after your first entry, and the extension will be added to your original end date. Make sure you have a TM 30 on file, which is usually required for the extension process.

IF you need it there,

you or your land lord files the TM30

GO to the office and ask the requirements to get the 30 day tourist extension, they'll tell you.

Remember the Day you arrive into Thailand counts as DAY #1

You can apply for the 30 days extension of stay at your local Thai Immigration office within the 30 days from your Visa Exempt Entry... the 30 days are ADDED to your current ending date... So going early is okay.

These are the common found requirements for the 30 days extension of stay at Thai immigration office for 1900 Thai baht.

You will need a TM 30 on file with most Thai Immigration offices.
