Is it possible to enter Thailand from the US as a tourist with passport but no visa, get married right away, apply for the non-o visa, open a bank account and deposit the 400k thb, wait 60 days, then get a marriage extension before I'd need to leave the country? Hope this makes sense!

TLDR : Answer Summary
The questioner asks if they can enter Thailand as a tourist without a visa, get married immediately, apply for a Non-O visa, open a bank account, deposit funds, wait for 60 days, and then secure a marriage extension without leaving the country. Multiple comments respond that this process is complicated; it's advised to obtain the Non-O visa before entering Thailand and be aware that opening a bank account will require the Non-O visa. Additionally, there are steps to take regarding notarized documents and marriage requirements that could delay the process.

Do you still need a letter saying you are free to marry? Or is that only if you have been married before.

Slow down do research before you get married.. it's less stress for both of you

Get the non-o before you come you’ll have big problems trying to open a bank account without one and check if there’s a time that you need to be married before you can apply don’t forget the letter from the US embassy stating your free to marry

While it may be feasible, the main challenge is the timeline.

1. Schedule an Appointment at the U.S. Embassy in Bangkok: The first step is to book an appointment at the U.S. Embassy in Bangkok to have a copy of your passport notarized and to sign the affidavit confirming your eligibility to marry. You can easily schedule this appointment online from the U.S.

2. Translation and Certification of Documents: Next, you’ll need to have all your documents translated into Thai and certified at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) at the Chaeng Watthana government complex. I recommend using a translator at the MFA rather than an external one, as the staff there are more familiar with the specific terminology required. If you go with an external translator, your documents may be returned for corrections, which can delay the process. IMPORTANT: Be sure to book an appointment at the MFA online before your visit at

3. Select an Amphoe: Then, identify an Amphoe (district office) where you plan to get married. Be aware that they also have waiting times, particularly in Bangkok, and will review all your documents before providing an appointment. The process can differ significantly between Amphoe, and it might be easier to navigate outside of Bangkok. For instance, we got married at the Bang Rak Amphoe and received an appointment four weeks after our documents were approved.

Lastly, don’t forget to arrange for two Thai witnesses for the marriage registration.

If you came in on a 60 day visa exempt AND you managed to open a bank account to put funds in you would then need to apply for a 90 day Non-O visa and then the 12 month extension of stay. Plus some immigration offices will want to see that you have been married for a couple of months before allowing you to apply for the 90 day Non-O visa. So whichever way you look at it you're not going to get through the process in a couple of months.

You might find it easier to come in on a 60 day stamp and get married and then leave. Come back having applied for the 90 day Non-O visa outside of Thailand and then it should be fairly straightforward to open a bank account and apply for an extension when you are 60 days into that visa

Why TF would you do that

You need to have the bank account to apply for the initial non-o inside of Thailand. It is next to impossible to do without an agent, and only slightly easier if you can find the right agent and bank. Alternatively you can easily fly to a neighboring country once you are married and have all the paperwork and apply for a single entry non-o there.

@Wylie ******
you dont need a thai bank to show funds as long as you have an account with the funds you are good.
Wylie *******
@Andrew *******
you absolutely need the funds in a thai bank account in your name only when applying for the non-o based on marriage inside of Thailand. When you apply OUTSIDE of Thailand then it is as you say. You can show a bank account from your home country to meet the financial requirement.
Andrew ********
@Wylie ******
again ... you do not need a thai bank account to show funds you just repeated what I said with extra steps... he is better off doing this in his home country applying for visa doesn't sound like he will have time. You people here Crack me up you rush to say "no your wrong..." then explain how I was right anyway
Wylie *******
@Andrew *******
🤣🤣🤣 You accuse me of just repeating what you said when that was literally what you did. I was very clear that INSIDE of thailand you need the thai account and OUTSIDE of thailand you do not. Then you accuse me of being quick to respond that "no you're wrong" when again that was literally what you did. My response never called you wrong, only repeated the clarification that you left out. You call leaving that critical info out as extra steps🤣

The op stated he was coming to thailand to get married. So it is not a matter of him not having the time to apply before he comes as you state.

Reading comprehension isn't your strength. Feel free to delete your comment out of embarrassment 🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡

Why not just apply for Non-o visa online before you go Thailand, it's very easy

I was trying to only tie up 400k instead of 800k thb up front. If that's the only way, I can cover it.

@Pete *****
that’s getting a lot harder to

do

@Pete *****
you can do your plan if you can find an agent to open a bank account for you. Or you can get married then go to a neighboring country and apply for a marriage visa there using your home bank account.
Jón **************
@Brandon ***********
you don't need to be married to get Non-o visa
Brandon ************
@Jón *************
the op doesn't want to use 800,000 he wants to use 400,000. Therefore he needs to be married.
Jón **************
@Brandon ***********
ahh okay. But visa agent office can do this, don't need 4-800k
Brandon ************
No, because you need the money in a Thai bank account in order to apply for the non-O visa inside of Thailand. And you won't be able to open the bank account yourself if your entered Thailand as a tourist.
Nine ******
@Brandon ***********
