I am going to receive a one-year extension on my retirement type “O” visa with a single entry permit, will I be able to change it to a multiple entry permit at a later date?

TLDR : Answer Summary
Once you receive a one-year extension on your retirement type 'O' visa with a single entry permit, you cannot directly change it to a multiple entry permit. However, you can purchase a single re-entry permit while in Thailand. If you exit the country using this single re-entry, upon re-entering, you have the option to buy a multiple re-entry permit.

This single entry and multiple entry stuff is a little confusing.

@Wayne ******
is it because of the single entry/ multiple entry visa vs. the single entry/multiple entry re-entry permit?

I’m not sure why. A single reentry permit lets you back in the country once. Multiple entry means you can come and go as you please until the validity of your entry stamp. Every day if you so desired ( in normal times).

a visa as in a sticker in your passport or an extension of stay - a stamp from a local immigration office in Thailand?

a stamp in my passport. From local immigration office. Samut Prakan.

ok. Extensions of stay do not have any re-entry associated with them. You have to buy a re-entry permit if you wish to leave Thailand and come back using the stamped “valid until” date of your stamp. If you think you’ll only leave once buy a single re-entry stamp for 1,000 baht. If you think your going to leave 3 times or more get a multiple re-entry stamp for 3,800 baht.

I usually do the calculation of 1 multi-entry is (roughly) the financial equivalent of 4 (rather than 3) single-entry. So, since it is unlikely that I will travel outside Thailand more than 4 times in a year, I do the single-entry permit and I get it at the airport. It takes about 10-15 minutes and I am always at least 2 or more hours early, it's not a big deal. That also means when I go to CW for my yearly extension, I don't get any re-entry permit there.

very well explained. Thank you. All of you guys are invaluable. Really good.

Thank you Benjamin in above comments as well.

You won't be able to "change it", if you buy a single re-entry permit for 1000baht that's it, and you can only have one re-entry permit valid in your passport at a time, so you couldn't get a multiple re-entry permit until you used the single re-entry permit..

BUT

Say you get a single re-entry permit, once you exit/re-enter the country you could buy a multiple re-entry permit after that for 3800baht.

extensions are sold as "no entry" <- meaning they don't come with a re-entry permit because you're already IN thailand.

You can buy a single or a multiple re-entry permit when ever you want to as long as you do it before you fly out you're fine.

if I only purchase a single entry permit and at a later date I determine I need a multiple entry permit is it possible to upgrade to a multiple entry permit from a single entry permit?
Tod *********
@Lynn *******
nope, I answered that further down, you can only have one valid re-entry permit in your passport at a time.

good luck, AND also remember that both Don Mueang & Suvarnabhumi airports sell re-entry permits
****
(or they did until the country closed and they most likely will once it opens back up too) SO even if you have no re-entry permit you can buy one at the airport before you fly out

I tell most people to at least get a single entry re-entry permit because that way they're covered if they need to leave the country for an emergency and don't need to worry about buying one at the airport before they fly out.
