TLDR : Answer Summary
You cannot change a single entry O visa to a multiple entry O-A visa while in Thailand. The O-A visa can only be applied for in your home country. However, you can apply for a yearly extension to your non-O visa if you meet the financial requirements. Alternatively, you can obtain a multi-entry re-entry permit to facilitate travel.

Just get a multi-entry re-entry permit. That is how it is done for a type O extension. A single re-entry permit is bt1000. A multi-reentry permit is bt3600, but right now they are not allowing type O extensions for retirement to re-enter.

No. A OA visa can only be applied for in your home country. If you meet the financial requirements you can get a year’s extension to your non O visa.

as long as you can meet the financial requirements you can get a year extension of stay. It is not multi entry. You’d need to apply for a re-entry permit. They are sold as either a single entry for 1,000 baht or 3,800 baht for multiple entries.

All he needs to do is request multiple entry when he applies for 1 year extension and pay the 3900.

I’ve just done it.

And you filled out a form called the TM8 which is the application for a re-entry permit.
