Can I apply for a Thai Digital Nomad Visa from outside Thailand using a bank statement for proof of address?

DTV application: here's a question I haven't seen answered and might be pertinent to some.

As a digital nomad traveling constantly from country to country every few months, I cannot really comply with the "proof of location" as you'd normally do, with a renting contract, utility bill, etc. I do have a bank statement from my home country that can show my registered home address (Portugal), but I wouldn't be applying from Portugal, it would be an online application while staying somewhere outside of Thailand. Is it safe to apply with this document? I want to make sure of that because wasting $250 or so on a rejected application would be a shame.

Thank you.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user seeks clarification on applying for a Thai Digital Nomad Visa while being outside Thailand. They cannot provide typical proof of residence like a rental contract or utility bill, but they have a bank statement showing their home address in Portugal. Comments suggest that while applying, proving physical presence in the applying country is essential, and it may vary by embassy. Some users have successfully used other documents as proof.

I think it depends on each embassy. The Thai Embassy where I'm living requires you a proof that you're legally residing here, it can't be a tourist. They ask for the Foreigner Registration Card and also a Entry/Exit record.

You just need to prove that you're physically in the country you're applying from.

I sent my entry slip for Hong Kong to the consulate hete.

yes, that's what the whole "proof of location" thing is about. You apply in the country you're currently in

Hey
@Steve ******
do you have to be physically in HK while applying for DTV visa online?
Steve *******
@John ******
I'm currently just booking one night at a time in HK until I get the visa or get rejected 😅

- Consular is a man/woman of many words :). Hope you hear soon. Applied today myself at another Embassy. Have to return on August 6th. Line was long and many others were there applying for DTV as well. Clearly the flood gates are open.

@John ******
yeah, I saw that too, so I asked them directly and got this answer.

I haven't heard back since I applied on Saturday though, so I still don't know for certain.

here's what they said when I asked.

I applied on Saturday and haven't heard anything back yet, I'll update the group once I get a reply for my application.

I emailed them about the DTV visa and they said I could apply even if I'm not a resident. The e-visa website let me apply in HK and I did on Saturday. I'm waiting for their decision now, since yesterday was a public holiday, I haven't heard anything from them yet.

You can apply in person from Laos as a non resident. Passport stamp of entry and local accommodation used for residence purposes. Laos Thai Embassy informed me as such, there are also details on their website. Others have posted of their non-resident application to Laos. Cambodia, Malaysia.
John *******
@Miguel ************
- It varies by embassy. For example, the embassy in Cambodia and Malaysia allow visitors to apply, but the Hong Kong embassy (for some strange reason) doesn't. This is for all visas.
John *******
@Steve ******
Are you a resident of Hong Kong? The Thai Embassy website is clear that visitors can not apply via this embassy:
Knowm *******
Miguel da Fonseca already seen it - and it doesn't make the application process away from your home country any clearer - it's new so things will probably change, but right now it's unclear where else it can be applied for outside of Thailand (apart from your home country)

Anyhow, hope it works out

this is an interview released a couple of days ago with the Deputy Director General of the Consular Section of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs about the news visas, with a focus on DTV. You might want to have a look.

Miguel da Fonseca I know this, I too live in Thailand, but you can't do that with the DTV - it's not a tourist visa and doesn't work the same way - this is why there are so many people asking questions - have a read of this (from Siam Legal) - it states very clearly that you can't just border hop and apply for a DTV...

"Where You Apply

When applying for the DTV, you must go to the Thai Embassy or Consulate in the country where your employment is based. For example, if you work remotely for an American company, you must apply from the United States. If you are self-employed, you must apply from a country in which you are a legal resident and pay taxes.

You CANNOT simply hop the border and apply from Laos like you could for a basic tourist visa"

@Knowm ******
you can apply to a visa in Thailand from any country other than Thailand just by being there. I've done that myself when I wanted to spend 6 months in Thailand and only had 60 days. I went to Penang nearby to get a visa to re-enter, it's what everyone that lives in Thailand constantly without a long-term visa does.
Knowm *******
Steve Demir hi Steve - so you applied successfully online for the DTV in Hong Kong without being a resident or work permit holder in Hong Kong? I'm confused about whether it's possible to apply for it outside of a person's home country, and although on the Thai e visa site it tells me I can in Hong Kong as a UK passport holder, some people told me you can't if you are not resident or working in Hong Kong

ah, gotcha.

in Hong Kong they don't stamp your passport, they give you a little piece of paper. So any proof of entry should suffice.

@Steve ******
what do you mean by entry slip, the passport stamp?
Graham ******
If you are physically in a "foreign" country you will have an entry stamp in your passport

last year when i was applying for the TR evisa from China, I did submit the photo of entry stamp on my passport and it was okay. But if i were you, I would contact the embassy you're applying to via email beforehand to make sure that is ok.

oh, will that do? I guess that is literally "proof of location".
