Hi, does anyone know the situation on applying for a Non B before coming into Thailand? It seems most people have to fly into Thailand and then go to Laos to start their application there, especially teachers. I am helping out an employer, it seems a very long and expensive process. Thnx for any help.

TLDR : Answer Summary
You can apply for a Non-B visa at a Thai consulate in your home country if you have all the necessary documentation from your employer before arriving in Thailand. However, many people end up traveling to Thailand first and then going to nearby countries, such as Laos, to apply for their Non-B visa, primarily because they often need to secure a job first. While some find the process lengthy and expensive, others note that if you have the required paperwork ready, applying at a consulate is straightforward and not overly expensive.

It's easier to start the application from Thailand. No need police check.

IF you can get all the documentation from your employer BEFORE you come here, you can certainly apply for a Non-B at the thai consulate in your country.

The thing is most people don't have jobs before they wing their way here so until they do find a job they're on another type of visa. Once they get a job most employers send them to thai consulates in nearby countries to get their initial Non-B.

It's certainly not a long OR expensive process. you get the paperwork you go to a thai consulate and you apply for the visa.

- Not directly related to the OP but why can't people change to a non-b at Chaengwattana, can you only get it at Chaengwattana if you live in that area?

If you have the required documentation the consulates are pretty good. There are people from some countries that have to go back and use the thai consulate in their country to get a visa for thailand. They're listed on the websites of the consulates.

Are all the consulates willing to do the application or do some refuse to do it?
