My wife and I both got offered teaching jobs in Thailand. We have to get our non b visa ourselves. Do we have to get it from our home country (South Africa) or can we get it from our country of residence (United Arab Emirates)

TLDR : Answer Summary
The users are inquiring whether they can obtain a Non-B visa for teaching jobs in Thailand from their current residence in the UAE or if it must come from their home country, South Africa. Responses indicate that it is possible to apply for the visa in the UAE if all necessary paperwork is provided by the employer. Alternatively, they could also consider obtaining a 90-day Non-B visa from Laos, with caution regarding reliance on their employer.

If you have residence in the UAE you can ask the Thai embassy if you can apply there for a non imm b (1 year ). For this option you must have all the paperwork done by your employer. Otherwise you can do a non imm B (90 days) in Laos and then fo the extension inside after getting all the papers from your employer. Be careful of the 90 day option as you will be 100% mercy of your employer. If they dont honor their word you could be left stranded.

Your employer should provide you the documents needed to apply for this Non Immigrant B visa. Best is to ask them.
