TLDR : Answer Summary
Overstay penalties in Thailand do not apply to children under 15 years of age. Children under 18 cannot face bans for overstaying. However, once a child overstay occurs, obtaining an in-country visa at the immigration office becomes impossible, necessitating an exit and re-entry to reset their status.
While there is no penalty for overstay for children under 15 and children under 18 can't be banned for overstay remember you cannot get an in country visa issued at the immigration office for children once they go on overstay, SO if your goal is a long term stay here keep getting them the extensions or when you want to get a visa for them you'll have to bounce them out and back in to 'wipe the slate' and start over
