Does anyone know if the 5 year period begins when you enter Thailand or from when the visa is approved?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The 5-year period for a Thai visa begins from the date the visa is approved, not when you enter Thailand. Upon entry, you receive 180 days validity, and this can be extended, but each entry can only be extended once. It's essential to check the specific dates indicated on the visa itself.

Ir you read the Thai Embassy website, most of them, recommend not to apply more than 3 month before traveling to Thailand.

From the visa approval date. Actually, both valid from and valid to dates are written on the visa itself (either the sticker type one or the PDF file type one).

From when the visa is issued/approved. A quick glance at previous posts would reveal the relevant dates.

Visa is valid from day approved. You get 180 days on entry then you either leave or extend ONCE for a further 180 days after which you MUST EXIT Thailand and re enter. Each entry can be extended only once. The last date you can enter Thailand is the valid until date shown on your visa.
