Is it hard getting a drivers license in Thailand? I’m staying in Phuket and want to rent a car. Been here 6 months. Will likely stay another 6 months or longer. Thanks in advance.

TLDR : Answer Summary
Obtaining a driver's license in Thailand, specifically in Phuket, is generally considered straightforward, especially for expats with a valid foreign license in English or an International Driver's Permit. To acquire a Thai driver's license, one typically needs to provide several documents including a Certificate of Residence from immigration, a medical certificate, and identification documents. The process involves a simple eye and reflex test along with watching an educational video, often in Thai. Some users reported the entire process could take just a few hours, while others noted variability in required documents based on different local office policies. It's advisable to consult the local Land Transport Office for specific requirements.

Lol have you seen how they drive here? If they can pass a test im sure anybody with a licence from a European country can 🤣

No

Straight-forward to do, whether converting or applying from scratch. Just need the right documents. This link has all the steps including test questions that are used in the multiple choice part of the exam.

The problem at the moment is getting an appointment. Waiting is at least a month. Numbers are limited due to covid restrictions.
Steve **********
Got mine first week many years ago. With Covid now, who knows.

Go to DMV, be polite, they will help. Nd a current license.
Graeme **********
It can’t be too easy….not many Thais seem to have one😝😝

was the case years ago. Then put test in form of cartoon, many passed.

@Steve *********
well the majority of those I’ve seen using the roads mustn’t have passed

Not your country. They think you drive to safe.

correct, but I’m slowly learning not to. I like to be included in the majority

good luck, after 17 years have yet to be included. You're indulged at best.

Go to blue tree immigration if you are close for the certificate of residence as they mentioned when they opened they will have signs up with prices for services to avoid any "mistakes" happening like someone who had been recently charged for a certificate of residence at Phuket town immigration lol.

What area is Blue Tree?

I can’t find Blue Tree Immigration on google maps. Is there another name for it?

it's the new immigration office located at blue tree. So just go to blue tree and it will be there.

If your Drivers License is in English it is fairly easy. You will need

Drivers License from your country

Passport

Certificate of Residency

Medical Certificate

Photos you will need for Residency Certificate

Photo copies of all

Then go to Land and Transfer office and watch a one hour video and three test. Reaction Time, eye test and one more. Pay your money and wait for license to be printed
Niclas ***********
Go immigration and get certificate of residence. 300-500 THB for express service. You can say it is for driving license they will understand. However you need passport photos and copies the latter should be available there and photos normally in the area. During pandemic and not being in Phuket I fan only guess.

You also need a fit to drive from doctor. Should cost 100 THB but you know how the pricing work now? 😅

There is a driving school offering theory and they do most of the papers. It is not the one in the link but it is on the right side of the same road. If you can bring Thai speaker always easier...

Chotima driving school

*****************************************

If you Google Thai driving test there is someone the put up the theory online.
George *************
If you have a valid foreign driver's license (with International Driving *Permit* or in English) you can avoid the theory and practical driving tests at the Land Transport Office. No particular benefit to using a driving school in this case.
George *************
@Niclas **********
In Phuket you get the Certificate of Residence from Phuket Town immigration office while you wait. They ask for 300 baht. If you decline to pay you will likely still get the certificate (I think it's worth 300, so I pay). You need one for each type of license, car and motorcycle. In Phuket, you can get photos done at a little shop behind the immigration office.
Garrett ***********
@Geo***
You shouldn't need 2 COR if you're getting the car and bike at the same time.
George *************
@Garrett **********
I agree, you shouldn't. The Phuket Land Transport Office disagreed, though. ;-)
Garrett ***********
@Geo***
I got mine in BKK a couple years ago, had a no problem using just one. Hate when things vary by office like that.
George *************
@Garrett **********
Yes, if they insist on two (because maybe the COR needs to be filed with each license application) it would seem that one could be a copy. It's not like you live somewhere for your motorcycle license and somewhere else for your car license. But this is a Land Transport Office that doesn't accept a yellow house registration book as proof of where you live, which is sort of the reason why the yellow book exists. ;-)
Maggie *****
Do you have a driver’s license somewhere else? Either way it’s not difficult but having one already make it even easier and cheaper

No, no, no. There's no such thing as an International License. However, they will happily sell you one. ;-)

To get a real Thai Driver's License, go to the Land Transport Office (less than a kilometer away from the Phuket Immigration Office):

George *************
@Mike ********
As said the two you need are a Residence Certificate from Phuket Immigration Office (300 baht) and a medical certificate from a health clinic (100-200 baht). Copies of passport, photo page, visa or extension. You will most likely be given an appointment time to return the first time you visit the Land Transport Office, but possible you could be served that day and therefore you should have these two required items with you when you go the first time.
George *************
@Mike ********
The health certificate can be obtained at a health clinic for as little as 100-200 baht. There's not much to the examination.

ID and proof of residence and a health certificate. Others might be able to tell you if you need other stuff as well as it’s been a few years since I got mine

Yes, 300 baht asked for the Certificate of Residence in Phuket. The Phuket Land Transport Office doesn't accept the yellow house registration book as proof of address.

What a weird province you're living in. The yellow book has the same legal purpose than the blue book for Thai.

cert always been required even for renewal
David **********
No it's extremely easy if you have a current licence in English from your home country.... They accept it and it's basically just the same as a Thai person renewing their license rather than a new application. Having said that, there's separate car and bike licenses here. I always advise people to obtain their bike licence back home first. If you don't have a bike licence already the process will be longer and require a practical test. Otherwise one can obtain both licenses easily in about 2 -3 hours. Just have to do quick eye test, reflex test and sit through a video in Thai that means nothing if you can't speak the language but they force you sit there anyway, I was lucky they let me leave the video early.

George *************
No, I don't know all immigration offices, but I do know the one I use. ;-) People don't seem to be comprehending that Phuket Land Transport Office insists on the Certificate of Residence from immigration or a letter from your embassy. Getting a letter from my embassy would cost on the order of 20 times as much as a Certificate of Residence and would waste an entire day of my time if not more than a day. When I can save 20 times what I would otherwise have to pay, I call that a bargain.
Tony ******
@George ************
I have been to Phuket immigration many many time over the last 12 years and I have never paid for a letter of residence it is free however some officers may try to tell you otherwise the answer is simply. It's my understanding that letters of residence are issued free of charge can I speak to a senior officer 🧐 they will soon change there mind... It's down to you as an individual to show your not going to be taken for a fool.
George *************
I think we shall just have to agree to disagree on this. ;-)

I'll make three points and then drop it: 1) the only other alternative available to me is an expensive and time-consuming trip to Bangkok to visit the US Embassy which is never an enjoyable experience for me and pay $50 for an affidavit that can be used in lieu of the Certificate of Residence. 2) Unlike the 90 Day Report which is required, the Certificate of Residence is an extra service that I don't believe should be free, although I recognize that there's no officially established charge. 3) There are immigration offices that do not provide the Certificate of Residence, ones that provide a free one that you must wait weeks to get, and ones that charge 500 baht for expedited service if you want one while you wait.

I'm OK with you not paying for the Certificate of Residence, and from your own experience immigration is OK with you not paying for it. What I'm not OK with is making a big fuss about it, as some media organizations are wont to do, such that Phuket Immigration stops the status quo and adopts one of the Certificate of Residence policies mentioned in 3), and I end up having to do 1). Paying 300 baht as requested satisfies my concern in 2) and makes it less likely that 3) happens and I end up having to do 1).
Vasco ***********
@George ************
In that case you are right, if they require this in phuket, definitely better do as you say. Each immigration has its own rules and also land of transport. Better to pay 300 baht than to spend flights, hotels etc. in addition to make an appointment and lose even 1 week of time.

@David *********
do I go down to Phuket immigration for that?
George *************
Given that Phuket Land Transport Office only accepts Certificate of Residence from immigration or letter from Embassy ($50 + cost of trip to Bangkok), 300 baht seems like a bargain to me.
Frédéric ******************
@George ************
If something supposed to be free is charged 300 baths to you, I won't call that a bargain.
George *************
I'd be even happier if Phuket Land Transport Office would accept as confirmation of my address any one or combination of the following that I do have in lieu of the Certificate of Residence:

1. Yellow house registration book

2. Thai driver's license

3. Pink ID card

4. Utility bill from CAT for internet service

5. Utility bill from PEA for electricity

6. Green motorcycle registration book

All of which show my name and address. But they don't. ;-)
Ekkehard *******
@George ************
Indeed, I never needed a Certificate of Residence because my yellow house registration book served the same purpose for address confirmation (in Buri Ram).
George *************
@Frédéric ****************
When the only alternative is paying 50 USD (1,561 baht) plus the cost to travel to Bangkok from Phuket (airfare), hotel, appointment at US Embassy, a complete waste of at least one day. Yes, 300 baht is a bargain. I'm well aware of immigration offices in Thailand that do not provide the Certificate of Residence at all, or provide a free one if you don't mind waiting 1-3 weeks for it, or charge you 500 baht for expedited (while you wait) service. So given that, yes I don't mind paying 300 baht for a CofR while I wait. I don't expect it to be free. I wish there was an official charge for the CofR but TIT, there isn't. You don't have to pay the 300 baht if you don't want to (you will most likely still get your CofR). Me, I'm happy to pay for one every 5-6 years when I renew my driver's license.
Vasco ***********
@George ************
well you don't know all immigrations apparently, i never paid immigration residency certificate here at hat yai. To pay for a category B driving license, I spent 235 baht with 10 baht of plastic case and medical examination 30 baht. Spending 300 baht for just the residence sheet when it is free to get it is not a bargain, but a piss.
Frédéric ******************
@George ************
We can renew our driving licenses in any province. Try Pang Nga or Krabi next time.
George *************
@Frédéric ****************
I am extremely cheap (or as I like to say, frugal) but even I would blanch at driving all the way to Phang Nga or Krabi to save 300 baht. ;-)

I would find it strange that Phang Nga or Krabi would allow me to get a driver's license with my Phuket address on it.
Frédéric ******************
@George ************
Everybody can renew their driving license all around Thailand, Thai and foreigners alike, wherever their address is. Many Thai don't live at their registered address and transport department decided to take that into account some years ago, thank to their internet linked system.
George *************
In my experience, the video was in English. I guess it depends whether you're assigned to the foreigner video or the Thai video.
George *************
@Mike ********
Yes, you would first go to Phuket Immigration to obtain a Certificate of Residence (they will ask for 300 baht). Then, less than a kilometer away is the Land Transport Office where you can get your driver's license.

It’s very easy , please google it if Canadian just can translate their license. If it’s easy translation from consulate with stamp, registration where you live from immigration , health test from a doctor, copies of passport and visa..that’s it ....done in 1 or two hours ...but at the moment you need an appointment.....the test of green /red and reaction test is funny, the video one hour , just look and laugh....done

@Reiner ********
if the license is in English, no translation required.

Although they can insist that you have an International Driver's Permit, often they will accept a valid foreign license if it's in English, so Canadian should be fine without translation required.
