How can I obtain a Thai driving license and what challenges may I face during the process?

Quick report for who wants to get a thai driving license.

I've done car and motorbike today, had to take the test 2 times for a total of 100 questions.

Questions are poorly translated, some miss negations or make no sense at all as they are.

Some has more than 1 correct answer or no correct answer.

For example "alcohol increases time to react" and "alcohol causes slower response" look both correct to me but one is wrongly translated.

Some require to know a precise answer like how many meters, how many days, how many baht, common sense and experience from driving in your country will not help for those.

The day before the exam you have to sit and watch a 5 hours video, my advice is to spend that time looking online for all possible questions and pass through all of them.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The process of obtaining a Thai driving license can be challenging due to poorly translated test questions and potential long wait times for appointments. Test-takers must watch a 5-hour video and take a challenging exam with confusing questions. It's advised to check online resources for sample questions beforehand. Expats with a valid international driving permit (IDP) may be able to skip some tests. Additionally, some prefer to trade money for a license or skip the legal process entirely, although this poses risks.

Test still as it was 6 years ago šŸ¤£šŸ˜…

the test was awfully constructed when I first did it. Seems itā€™s still the same

@Mike *****
I did it 4 years ago for a license that then expired, much harder now šŸ˜œ
Rhett *********
Are you serious? My agent(year ago)took my current HC/MB OZ license and me with one visit out there and did one reaction test,got car and bike licenses same day in 1 hour.
Martin *********
@Rhett ********
I think he knows that , but as he explained.. heā€™s Italian license is not in English so he couldnā€™t use it and had to take a much more longer different test .

The real test the translation is clearer

I just drive on my international driving permit and never had a problem when stopped. So I wouldnā€™t go for a Thai license unless they change things. Plus once you have it, you can drive in most countries with it.

@Juffair ******
For motorbikes too?

ORIGINAL POSTER
@Juffair ******
you need a thai license if you stay more than 3 months and you can use your IDP to get it without you testing
Juffair *******
@Daniele **********
oh thatā€™s interesting, Iā€™ve been here 2 years and still on my IDP. Probably because I live in such a rural area and they donā€™t speak English so itā€™s too much bother for them so they just wave me on šŸ˜

I suspect the Thai version of this may be no better - once read (in Thai) a third-party test prep manual for I think motorbike exam, and, yes, there were all those precise questions about "how many meters..." :-)
Terry ********
The test is online with all the correct answers. My suggestion to anyone going in to write the test is: learn the road signs, learn the rules, then go to website and read the test with correct answers. The test can be confusing due to small pictures and bad translation. By reading the test online it will let you know what 1 of the 2 correct answers they are looking for. Anyone can DM me for links to Proper English sites. Note: I think driving without a proper license is really not an option. You will be at fault for any mishap whether your fault or not. Negotiations with a Thai (plus all their family) at the police station might not go as you expect. Best just learn, take the test, pass, be legal. If you just go buy a license then you are no better than those Thai's that many laugh at.
Gary ****
Or just do what every single Thai does and buy your license from a driving school. 3000 baht and they will do it all for you. Hence the horrendous standard of driving here.

@Gary ********
I'm LOLing here, because (based on your comment) I asked my wife how she learned to drive and what process she went through to obtain her license and she laughed and said, "It's bad. I bought it!" It was exactly what you described! šŸ˜†

@Gary ********
Can a farang do this?? If so I'm in!! šŸ˜…

or just try avoid police and pay 400 when you get stopped, maybe thai can get away with 200

I had bike and car license from own Country so it's easy to transfer to a Thai license and be legal.

yeah, not too hard either way, as said 5 hours study is all I needed

I have an Australian license and international driving permit (plus work permit for Thailand) does that mean i csn skip the testing and just get a comversion to thai license?
Jennifer ******
@Lincoln ******
We just had to sit through an hour boring video, well dam right hilarious in some parts, and then do a reaction test with stop go lights. Super easy.
Lincoln *******
@Jennifer *****
thanks i'll be sure to bring some popcorn :)

@Lincoln ******
yes, for the category covered by your IDP

great thanks for confirming, will look into the process

Might sound like a stupid question, but do you need to take your own motorbike & helmet there for the driving test or are these supplied? Auto?

@Bob *******
there will be someone there happy to rent, paid 300 for the car, bike used mine
Andrew ******
Thanks. I would like to do both my licenses too. Do you just go there and on that days start the process or do you have to register and then wait to be told when you can start the process? Do you know of specific sites to find the question and answers to the test questions. Re alcohol question which one did you answer by the way.
Wylie *******
@Andrew *****
depending on where you are at there may be a Honda driving school nearby. It's a 2 day class that involves riding a motorbike too. They go through most of the available questions, the test itself is something like 50 of the 300 or 400 available questions taken at random. You also get to take practice tests for an hour or two. At then end you take the test there and if you pass get a certificate to take to the land transport office. Once there you just have to take an eye test and pay the fee for both the motorbike and car license.

@Andrew *****
try go monday 8am with all the papers ready, maybe they let you do or give you appointment. Lot of questions here thaidriveexam.com. Alcohol was the second one
Daniele ***********
ORIGINAL POSTER
Translation not same, online you can only find thai questions or automatically translated
Wylie *******
When taking the test and going through a lot of sample questions/tests at the Honda driving school the instructors specifically point out a ton of the questions that are translated incorrectly and many of them you have to specifically pick an incorrect answer (when translated) to get it correct.
Joran *******
Congrats! Do you mind sharing how long did you have to wait for your turn after registration? I remember reading somewhere that it may take up to 1 or 2 months of waiting for opening slots.
Daniele ***********
ORIGINAL POSTER
@Joran ******
1 month, you can try go there 8am in the morning, if somebody miss the appointment they could let you do
Joran *******
@Daniele **********
ahh I see. Good to know. Thanks!

I'm thinking of trying to get a car driving license during a 60 days visit to Thailand, though not sure if that is possible as some agents listed that a minimum of 60days remaining on the visa is required, and a wait of 1 - 2 months for appointment is anticipated.

Thanks for sharing!

Alcohol increases the time ( required) to react: I guess it means you need more time to react, the extra word would help clarify.
Daniele ***********
ORIGINAL POSTER
@Lynnette ******
yes, that's true and the other one is true too, need to flip a coin. I think correct translation should be alcohol improves the time to react which is false.

For another question I had to choose the only wrong answer because it was missing a negation in the question...
Lynnette *******
@Daniele **********
yes. Strange translation. Maybe "improves" is the missing word.
Martin *********
Didnā€™t you already have a driving licence from your own country ? ā€¦because if you have you never would have needed to go though all that at all !
Todd *********
@Martin ********
totally depends on the office you use. Many donā€™t accept foreign licenses

I have italian license, they didn't take it, my old thai license expired more than 1 year ago didn't help either

bastava andare all'ambasciata e ti avrebbero rilasciato la traduzione loro šŸ¤”
Martin *********
@Daniele **********
oh is that because it not in English ?
Daniele ***********

@Martin ********
I think so. In the end everything costed me 2 days and 300 baht so I'm happy with this solution.
Bob ********
Do you need an Australian (or whatever your home country is) motorbike licence to obtain a Thai motorbike licence?
Daniele ***********
ORIGINAL POSTER
@Bob *******
if the license from your country is in English, or you have a certified translation, or international driving permit it should be possible to skip all the testing and get a thai license
Michael ***********
@Daniele **********
No, you still have to take the reflex tests and the written (computer) exam.
Bob ********
@Daniele **********
I have an Australian driving licence but not a motorbike licence - but I want to ride motor bikes in Thailand.
Daniele ***********
ORIGINAL POSTER
@Bob *******
then you'll have to do all the training, theory exam and practical exam. Haven't mentioned the practical exam in the post because haven't found any difficulty in it
Berto ******
@Daniele **********
Not correct I have both licences, I only gave them my UK license. Then did a colour test with a traffic light, 1 hour video and was given both licences.
