Hi everyone, I have a DTV (Destination Thailand Visa) and I plan to stay in Thailand long-term, but will likely move between hotels/short-term accommodations frequently (no fixed address) to see different places.

My funds are mainly in Revolut and a European bank, and I’m trying to:

* minimize Thai ATM fees (I think is 220 THB per withdrawal)

* avoid a cash-heavy lifestyle, since cash spending gets out of control easily

I’d really appreciate real-world input from people who stay for months:

1. Is it actually feasible in practice to open a Thai bank account on a DTV visa, or is it very branch-dependent / hit-or-miss?

2. If you have a Thai bank account, how do you fund it in real life in order to avoid high fees?

– Revolut → Thai bank directly?

– Wise?

– another method?

3. What is the real monthly cost (fees + FX), not the theoretical one?

4. For those who change accommodations often, what address did you give when opening the account?

5. In your experience, is opening a local Thai bank account really worth it, or does it just replace ATM fees with transfer fees?

Thanks in advance 🙏

Hello everyone 🙏🏻

I have a question about how much cash I should bring. I was reading in another expat page (Italian) where it was strongly advised to bring a lot of cash that can then be exchanged on site. However, I have a Wise card on which I have been told I can add Thai currency. So, my question is for those of you who don’t have a Thai account, what do you suggest? I plan on staying in Thailand from December through May. Should I bring cash and then exchange it as I need it or just use the Wise card at the ATM?

Thanks ahead of time for the advice.

Well this will be an everything else post. I eat out on the street in Chiang Rai and love it. Great food great prices BUT the ATM gives me 1K Baht notes and they are about useless when I want to buy a 50 Baht meal. I just feel it rude in your face to pay with a big paper bill to pay for a small amount due. I just opened a Bangkok Bank account with debit card, but even if I pull out 5K Baht I am given 5 1K notes... Any constructive advise is very much welcome. Was not a problem before as I would buy a couple three packs of the beer for my room with a 1K Baht note so always had smaller denominations notes, but passing on the beer till I can drop some weight.

Slightly off topic question (Tod please feel free to delete if needed) - does anyone know if it's possible to buy £ or $ travellers cheques in Thailand (CNX) ???? - I've asked at a couple of banks and got a blank look.

(Context - I ideally don't want to wander around with 20k cash on me when I'm off travelling round SE Asia before coming back into Thailand on a new SETV).

Thanks 😄
