Slightly off topic question (Tod please feel free to delete if needed) - does anyone know if it's possible to buy £ or $ travellers cheques in Thailand (CNX) ???? - I've asked at a couple of banks and got a blank look.

(Context - I ideally don't want to wander around with 20k cash on me when I'm off travelling round SE Asia before coming back into Thailand on a new SETV).

Thanks 😄

TLDR : Answer Summary
The original poster inquires about purchasing travelers cheques in Chiang Mai, Thailand, expressing concern about carrying a large amount of cash while traveling in Southeast Asia. Several comments suggest that travelers cheques are less common and that ATMs are widely available for withdrawing cash in foreign currencies. Users recommend using ATMs to withdraw USD or THB just before re-entering Thailand and also mention specific banks, like Bangkok Bank and Citibank, that may sell American Express travelers cheques.

I found small denominations of US$ the most convenient for day-to-day expenses when traveling around Vietnam and Cambodia.

Traveller's checks can be a PIA to cash these days. Kind of surprised they still exist.

Thanks all. Sounds like an ATM just before we fly back to Thailand could be the best bet if Amex can't help.

@Char*****
this is only really any sort of risk if you are flying back in to Thailand. If you are returning by land, you can just try without the 20k and if you are refused, just go to an ATM on the Cambodian side and take it out. Also note that it doesn't have to be THB, so as
@J**
says if you are flying back from Cambodia you can just take out ~$600 in USD there immediately before you leave. USD is no problem changing in Thailand and you will get a good rate. Don't follow this advice with VND if you are flying direct back from Vietnam though as that is very difficult to change and a bad rate.

Use an ATM to withdraw USD (20k equiv) in cambodia the day before you return to thailand. Ive never heard of travellers cheques here

Dear
@Char*****
, I understand you want to travel, without cash. Hard to do in Asia where almost every transaction is done by cash. But the day you decide to come back to Thailand, why it seems to be impossible for you to stop if you're on the way at an ATM and take the equivelant of that 20k Thb out an ATM, show if needed, change it into Thb after arrival and use the money during your stay here.

Use of Travelers Checks is way down as ATMs are everywhere. You can also get a cash advance on a Visa / MasterCard credit card inside a Thai Bank with ID-passport... If your Card is approved for cash advance by your issuing bank

My comment was just reflecting the many posts I have read about using traveler's checks... Mostly the consensus as I recall was TCs are a bit of a dinosaur but still in use. You can get 20K baht with a MasterCard / Visa debit card at an ATM if your issuing bank has that amount checked in your account. Some people if challenged at a Imm. Checkpoint just locate an ATM to get the 20K.

Hi JD. I'm not after the actual cash as such. As we all know there is a chance when entering Thailand you may need to show 20k. I'm doing a 2 month tour of Vietnam/Cambodia and I don't really want to walk around with 20k cash so was seeing if I could get travellers cheques instead for when I come back. I can't get them from home as I'm in Thailand already.

Post office sells them from what I heard

Thai post office?

You can be asked to show 20k Thai bath or equivalent in foreign currency. You can take money out of the bank before departure to Thailand.

I'm trying to avoid carrying the cash when I'm in Cambodia - I can't get travellers cheques at home as I'm already in Thailand.

Problem is putting it back if you don't have a Thai bank

Your only possibility would be American Express themselves.
