TLDR : Answer Summary
The post discusses the difficulty of exchanging USD in Myanmar, particularly the rejection of old-style bills. The user is stranded as their ATM cards don't work and they're unable to find acceptable currency. Several comments provide advice, highlighting the importance of only using 'blue stripe' bills and recommending Western Union for cash. They also share experiences about ATM usability and suggest alternatives for exchanging money.

Did you have to notarize your bank statement?
Sue *****
Due to various exchange rate issues, ATM, Master Card, Visa Card and money changers are not functioning in Myanmar. So, it's recommended to find and connect with money transfer agents instead.
Paul *******
Sue Sue That's not true at all. While many ATMs have functionality issues, Visa and Mastercard work in some of them. Moneychangers abound in Yangon at least.

Generally speaking, I wouldn't want to rely on ATMs in Myanmar at the moment as the exchange rates are low.

I'd bring lots of cash instead.

If it's an emergency, Western Union helps but again, I would recommend bringing sufficient cash.
Sue *****
@Paul ******
yes, If you’re coming to Yangon, it’s best to bring a lot of cash in USD. Using an ATM will give you the official government exchange rate of 2100 MMK per USD, but the actual market rate outside is around
*********
MMK per USD.If you end up needing to buy USD, you’ll likely face an even higher exchange rate, making it more expensive.

@Sue ****
True. Good advice.

these are exactly info, I needed before I traveled here and noone gave me.

People just laught of me, that I can get usd everywhere easily, and call me names in expat group, because I never used usd before... But Noone gave me these advices you writing now
Paul *******
Try getting more money via Western Union. Exchange rate is quite good when using WU.

You must be noted that all the blue $ notes cannot be accepted.

Only new and clean series 2017 and above.

You must request the Money changers to give New and Clean notes.

Also tell these will be given to Embassy.

Without broken, marks, stamps, and even carbons on the back side.

You can also change the old notes to New notes at the money changers. Ask them "How I need to give to get new notes?"

I think that you will give them between 50,000 - 100,000 MMK

I had the same issue 2022 they took them and stopped in 2023 half way through my trip.

Can't use them and not going back to the US to spend them.

I had to go look at my bills. I just got some from my US bank. The $100 bills are all blue striped. The $50 bills are not.
Paul *******
@Anita *******
I don't think 50 dollar bills are blue striped anyway. Not even the newer ones. I generally don't exchange 100s, as they're too big. I usually go for 50s and smaller notes as 100s can be difficult to spend (I need USD for my regular visit to Cambodia, among other places).

Slightly off topic. But how’s the city for travel? Safe enough? I’ve always wanted to go.

It is safe, soldiers in outposts everywhere 😅 I feel like in Pattani/Yala.

Just internet not working properly. They blocking even most of VPN providers. Working from here is really difficult
Paul *******
@Anton *******
Yes, I agree with that assessment. It's similar to Pattani and Yala.
Paul *******
@Alessandro **********
The city itself is safe enough but don't go out between midnight and 4am.

You shouldn’t use ATM in Myanmar because the rate is too low. Better to go to the exchange counter . Also some exchange counter facilities to change old note with blue note by a few penny

Why in the world would you go to Myanmar, it’s one of the last places I would ever go to

Oh my... sorry to hear that. I know that they always want "pristine", yes, but never heard that they are picky with the color... :-(

- Many business wont accept the old version, which are much easier to counterfeit. That version hasn’t been produced for over a decade

@John ******
I know... 2013 if I remember right? But I never heard that someone refused them. Well... until today... Obviously the Exchange shops still take them...?

Most exchange places in Asia only accept the "blue stripe" 100 usd bills. And if they are worn, have stamps or hand writing on them they will not take those too except some places that offer less than normal exchange rate for those bills. ALWAYS only bring spankling new dollar bills in most of Asia and be careful to store them well so they keep on looking new.....
John *******
@Stephan **********
- I learned the hard way when I couldn’t exchange them back in 2015 when I brought them with me to Zimbabwe

VISA and Mastercard are useless at ATMs in Myanmar. But if you have JCB and UPI it's fine. For dollars, there are some people selling dollars around the embassy. Try negotiating with them. I think you have to pay a bit more. Or try asking people who are on the same visa as you for help. They often have extra dollars. May you be fine.
Paul *******
@Hilary ****
Yes I'm helping him out by rebutting your statement.

In fact, I was in Myanmar a few months back and last year and VISA cards were accepted at the ATMs I used as usual (this was CB bank).

I hold a Myanmar bank account and since the exchange rates used by Burmese banks aren't good, it's better to transfer funds into your account from abroad using Western Union (Wise doesn't work for Myanmar) or bring sufficient cash and exchange it for Kyat there.

Just to conclude though - in an emergency, someone holding a foreign issued Visa or Mastercard should have no major issues withdrawing funds from an ATM, especially in Yangon. Not every ATM works though. Need to try different ones and stick with the major banks.

Yeah, at the end I used western union. Noone sugested this, and since I never used it before, I didnt know
Paul *******
@Anton *******
Yes I suggested Western Union. Glad it worked out for you.
Paul *******
@Hilary ****
I haven't heard anything to suggest VISA and Mastercard don't work at Burmese ATMs. You just have to choose the right one. CB bank, KBZ and Aeryawady are the best (there are a few others too).

For example revolut is not working here, nor Mastercard nor VISA
Paul *******
@Anton *******
Mastercard and Visa work in Myanmar for sure. However, I can't guarantee what ATMs will accept your cards. All I can say is, it's not as straightforward as it used to be before Covid, but at the same time only some banks were ever accepting foreign cards to begin with.
Hilary *****
@Paul ******
Hi there, I was talking to the owner of the post who recently came to Burma to get DTV. Not for me.

People running out of Vietnam, Philipines , Thailand , India , Sri lanka too... And still plenty of people traveling there...

@Anton *******
Very very few people currently visiting Myanmar, though it's a magical country. For foreigners, lots of restrictions..when I was in Kawthaung earlier this year, I was the only white westerner in the whole region, though there were several Thai, Chinese and Malaysian-Chinese tourists in town. Just no other westerners.

Yangon would see more westerners, but few are coming at the moment..

Lots of travel restrictions...you can't go wherever you want.
Ko *****
@Anton *******
Oh, you know more about the internal conflict situation than the citizens of Myanmar, right?

You check with some money changers.
