Can I travel to Malaysia and return to Thailand with both my old and new Italian passports?

Good evening, I have a question to ask you, if I can.

I just got the new passport (Italian) on which obviously there is no 12 month extension of stay (non-or immigrant, retired, multi entry) because it's on the old passport, now cancelled by the Italian Embassy, according to the law. Having both passports with me, can I go to Malaysia for a month and return to Thailand (I haven't decided yet by train or plane)?

I'm not under risk because the new passport didn't have anything printed on it?

The trip would be scheduled before my extention of stay expires, of course.

Thank you.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user has a new Italian passport without the 12-month extension, which was on their old, now-cancelled passport. They inquire about traveling to Malaysia and returning to Thailand, while understanding the need for proper visa management. Comments clarify that while traveling with both passports is generally acceptable, it's advisable to transfer the visa stamps to the new passport to avoid complications. A re-entry permit before leaving Thailand is important to maintain the current extension. Several users share their experiences and provide guidance on properly handling both passports when dealing with immigration.

If you go to Chaeng Wattana be aware there is a new rule : they ask for the same Bank document as extension : one year statement and withdrawal on the day you go.

I did the same but the italian embassy here automatically issued the request letter to shift the extension of stay to the new passport, I suggest you write then an email and tell them about this, surely they will make it and you can collect it.

You have to change your visa into the new passport at the immigration. The same time you can make a re- entry stamp. Before the yearly extension of the non-o you have to change it anyway.

Travelling with both passports is acceptable, i used to connect the two with an elastic band on the relevant current permit page and never had issues. The deadline for getting the permits moved over will be your next 90 day report, as you'll have to update your tm30 to reflect new passport no. Then within 14 days of 90 day report date visit imigration get the stamps moved and do your report in person in one visit. Saves you a trip.

If I go to the immigration office on Monday, they will probably ask me to come back on Tuesday to collect the new passport with the visas recorded. They takes 1 day to move it. The 90 days report deadline, in my case, coincides with the visa deadline itself, so it seems to me that at the end of the day, it's the same, am I wrong?

I went to Malaysia few days ago with old and new passport and I bought re-entry at the airport, they questioned me for about 2 mins and stamped re-entry on my new passport with no problems

Do you need to go to Immigration anyway before you travel to get a re-entry permit to keep your 12 month extension? You cannot do this at a land border.

@Graham *****
op should have multiple re-entry permit already

as a rule, you should apply for transferring current stamps at the immigration office that issued your extension. you may be able to travel with both passports, still, transferring stamps makes things simpler. bring both passport to the local immigration office and apply for transferring stamps. bring the letter as well if your embassy issued one with your passport. if they don’t issue a letter, have the receipt of new passport application if possible and in case.

thank you. The embassy didn't gave me any letter and any receipt as well. I hope it won't be a good reason to put me in trouble by the local immigration office; lately it seems to me they have become rather finicky.

you should be fine without any if they don’t issue any. IO knows which embassy does and which doesn’t
