Will my boyfriend with a multiple entry tourist visa be able to extend his stay and do we need a re-entry permit for Australia?

My bf (US passport) is about to come to Thailand with tourist visa (multiple entries) on 4 August. We plan to go to Australia for a week on 21 September which is within 60 days after arrival. My question is :-

1. After he left Thailand in 21 Sept then he will return back to Thailand from Australia on 28 September, will he get a stamp to stay in Thailand for another 60 days (starting from 28 Sept)? And he can get 30 days extension to be able to stay here until Christmas? Is my understanding correct?

2. When he leaves Thailand to go to Australia, will he need to buy re-entry permit in this case?

This is the first time he will come in with tourist visa so we are not quite sure about how it works… Thank you very much 😊

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user inquires about their boyfriend's ability to re-enter Thailand on a multiple entry tourist visa after traveling to Australia and whether he will need a re-entry permit. One commenter clarifies that with a multiple entry visa, each entry grants a 60-day stay, which can be extended by an additional 30 days at an immigration office. They also explain that if the boyfriend had a single entry visa, he would not be able to re-enter Thailand after visiting Australia without obtaining a new visa.

Hi
@Brandon ***********
thank you for the great info.... I am also looking at the same option multiple entry coming from Germany

My question would be do I need a return ticket when flying into Thailand? I plan to come in November and returning back to Germany end of April.

Also planning 1 or 2 weeks Vietnam and a few days Singapore.

I am not sure if I should book a one way in November to Thailand and a flight out to Vietnam after 90 days since it is possible to extend the 60 days to 30 more on each entry.

Maybe you could help me with that?

you don't need a "return" ticket but you should have proof of onward travel. This can be anything from a plane ticket to a bus ticket.

Normally immigration won't care, but your airline will check for your visa and see it lets you into Thailand for 60 days and want to see proof that you plan to leave within that time.

You need to be very sure if he's going to be getting a SINGLE ENTRY tourist visa, or a MULTIPLE ENTRY tourist visa. I'm not sure that the US consulates have even started selling the multiple entry tourist visas again?

If he has a multiple entry tourist visa, it is valid for 6 months. Every single time he enters Thailand before the end date on the visa, he will be stamped in for 60 days. Each of these 60 day entries can be extended for 30 days at the local immigration office. There's no re-entry permit because the visa specifically says it is for multiple entries.

If he has a single entry tourist visa, he will get stamped in for 60 days one time, and then the visa will be used and no longer allow entry.

Then when he leaves to Australia and returns he will be stamped in for 30 days visa exempt since he no longer has a visa since he used it already. He can extend this 30 days for an additional 30 days at the local immigration office. After that he will need to leave and re-enter the country or figure out another option. (this is if he only had the single entry visa).

I obtained the METV in late March from the Los Angeles consulate, so at least that is issuing it.
