What is the process for extending a visa or re-entering Thailand after a 30-day stay?

Hi all,

My GF and I got our visas on arrival for 30 days. If we want to stay beyond that what is the process? I plan to go to Singapore for about a week and comeback to Thailand, does that mean we have to get multiple entry visas?

Thanks!

TLDR : Answer Summary
The person and their girlfriend initially entered Thailand using a visa exemption valid for 30 days and are exploring options for an extended stay. It's clarified that there is no '30-day visa on arrival' as they mischaracterized their entry type; they entered under a visa exemption. To extend their stay beyond 30 days, they can apply for an extension at an immigration office in Thailand for a fee of 1,900 baht, or they may need to leave Thailand, ideally travel to Singapore, and apply for a new visa or re-enter under the visa exemption policy. However, re-entry can vary based on travel history.

I’m so glad visas are so simple (of course, this is not a problem only in Thailand)

You didn't come in by visa on arrival. You came in by visa exempt. Visa on arrival is where you pay for a visa on arrival at the airport, granting you a 15 day stay, and it is only for very few nationalities like Indians and Chinese. Visa exempt is where you were exempt from buying a visa on arrival or in advance, because your nationality allows you to be exempt and just get stamped in without a visa.

You can just arrive visa exempt again

You need to apply for a new visa while in Singapore. They don’t do re-entries in VOAs, visa exemptions, or tourist visas. You could try for another VOA or visa exemption when you return, but depending on your history of travel to Thailand they might turn you away. Max visa exemption allowance:

Online it says you can extend the VOA for 7 days, but I’ve heard you can extend up to 30. Never done it myself so not sure. For extensions go to immigration & apply. Application form will be available at the office. Fee is 1,900 baht. Bring passport, copy of photo page & current visa stamp. Copy of your arrival card. Copy of TM30 (talk to your accommodations about it, they’re supposed to file for you & can be done online so don’t let them tell you that you have to go do it).

Never trust what a embassy says about immigration policies within the country. Or vice versa. Two different government departments entirely. There is no limit on tourist visa entries or visa exempt entry by air. There is a limit of two visa exempt via land borders per calendar year. At some point immigration may question your intentions or indeed deny entry, but there’s no hard fast limit on when that might be. It’s at the discretion of the immigration officer.

Some people interpret the 7 days as an extension to a VOA. Some offices may not let you apply, but basically you apply but your application is denied. Because it’s denied you get a denied stamp in your passport and have 7 days to leave the country. So not really an extension, but you get 7 days.

No such thing as a 30 day visa on arrival.

Vis exemption for 64 countries allows stay for 30 days:

Visa exemption duration varies depending on nationality. 13 countries have 90 day visa exemptions. Other countries like China and India are not eligible for visa exemption and must buy a 15 day visa upon arrival, which is not extendable.

It's not a visa. A VOA is completely different to a visa-exempt

Didn’t claim it was a visa or the same as VOA 👍🏼 Just shared probably what they meant. Easy to mix up.
