Can a tourist on a 60-day visa get a re-entry stamp and extend their visa in Thailand?

Hi All

I have a query from a friend hoping someone can answer for me.

He is on an American and has a 60 day tourist visa which expires in early December which he got in Kl a couple of weeks ago he needs to return to the states for a couple of weeks

The question is can he get a re entry stamp before he leaves to allow him to come back into the country and can he extend this visa for another 30 days when he gets back in Phuket.
