I’m currently in Chiang Mai on a Covid extension issued by Chiang Mai immigration that ends on the 23rd Jan. I have a plan to go to Pattaya on the 22nd Jan. If I go to Chiang Mai immigration on Monday to get a new Covid extension will I have to go back to Chiang Mai immigration 2 weeks later to do the under consideration thing?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is seeking advice on whether they need to return to Chiang Mai immigration after applying for a Covid extension while traveling to Pattaya. Responses indicate that while it's typical to return for the under consideration stamp, some users were able to negotiate brief travel absences without issue. It is suggested to explain your travel plans to immigration to seek a possible grace period.

I had plans to be travelling to Chon Buri on the date I needed to return for my stamp after 2 weeks. I was only gone for 4 days, so I explained my travel plans to them and asked for a couple days grace. They didn't change my consideration stamp, but said ok fine but don't be any later than the day you say. It was maybe 2 days after the stamp I was returning.

I walked to immigration from the airport on my way back to Chiang Mai, and got my extension stamp no questions asked.

Obviously YMMV, but thats my experience. You can plead your case, at least with me they were amiable, but I can imagine it could have easily gone any other way.

thanks for sharing your experience. I’m planning on traveling for a few months so what you did isn’t really an option for me. I guess I’ll have to stay in Chiang Mai a little longer

how do you plan on travelling for a few months. What is your plan if you don't get a Covid extension? These are not a given, you may or may not get

Planing on traveling by using airplanes and various other methods of transportation.

If I don’t get a Covid extension I will not have a visa anymore and leave Thailand for some period of time.

If you get the under consideration stamp you have to go back to the same immigration office to get the remaining part of the issued days.

Maybe explain that you need to travel while you apply for the Extension of Stay based on unable to travel.

obviously it is absurd but is there any chance doing what you suggest could work?

Is the under consideration period always 2 weeks or does it vary?

It depends on the immigration office. Remember too, this extension of stay is NOT a right, it is optional by the immigration office.

It is a curtesy of the Immigration Office. Only the officer handling your application can decide how to give you permission to stay or not approve and tell you to leave the country.
